p.1 #14 · p.1 #14 · I LUV my X-T2... I'm not a video shooter... is there any reason to upgrade to the X-T3 or T4? | |
I just "upgraded" from an X T2 to a T4.
About 18 months ago, after deciding to downsize, and several months of looking at smaller options to FF DSLR's and heavy lenses, I decided to go with Fuji X T body style. Reputation for very nice glass, the external controls, and JPG's, thinking I may want the option to get away from RAW as well.
Took advantage of the great deals on the T2, post T3 launch: 18-55mm kit, plus 14mm f2.8. Was leaning to go prime.
Came to 2 conclusions: 1) I prefer zooms, and 2). am willing to compromise on weightsize and go with a 16-55 and 55-200.
The T4 makes sense to me for these reasons:
1. Never liked using tripods ... so IBIS can help off-set the 16-55 lack of IOS. I used Nikon and Canon 24-70 f2.8's, pre-image stabilization, and while I had few issues, I can see the value of IS for low light even on that range zoom. I really like shooting in natural light, often late in the day, at night on the street, and indoors.
2. Improved EVF, to my eyes, feels larger and smoother.
3. Improved AF, with full understanding of what that means. I.e. this is an evolutionary improvement on a camera that is not a necessarily designed for fast action shooting. That's not my thing; tf it was, I would not have gone with Fuji.
4. Skipped a generation testing the waters; now that I'm "all in", I'll start with the latest and hold for at least a few generations.
T4 compromises (it's always comes down to compromises):
1. The "flippy" screen. I much prefer the prior screen: feels stronger, more durable (metal), and more natural. While I understand why vloggers would like that, this is after all a camera, as far as form factor, so if I were into that kind of thing, I'd buy a camcorder. But I don't shoot video, so what I think on the subject is moot.
2. More on the floppy screen: to out into context, I've never given any though to using the screen to shoot, so never cared about this feature. The first time I used this on there T2 was at a Red Sox game. Probably used this a half dozen times at best. So in reality, for me, for something I may use a hand full of times, I can probably make do with the floppy screen.
3. Heavier, but to put in perspective, these numbers seen like a lot but IMHO are negligible compared to DSLR's. The T4 and 16-55 combined feels to me like less that a Nikon 24-70 by itself.
I really liked the T2, and it would have worked fine for what I need. The images are outstanding, and as others have said, perhaps a shade better than the T3T4. Sure, Sony FF's and Nikon mirrorless have an edge there. But I'm not a pro or amature, just a hobbyist, so I'm not getting paid or enlarging prints etc. On the scale I view and share, the APS-C sensor vs FF is IMHO moot. The build quality and feel IMHO of these X's is solid; many alternatives feel more plastic to me.
I'd say the key thing for me is the IBIS and decision on making the 16-55 the main lens in my kit. Many have commented that combination of IBIS in the H1 and that lens has been very helpful.
I would have stayed with the T2 if not for IBIS.
