p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · I LUV my X-T2... I'm not a video shooter... is there any reason to upgrade to the X-T3 or T4?

The caption says it all. I have been crazy about my X-T2 since upgrading from my X-T1. I have been reading all the reviews on both the X-T3 and X-T4 and since I am not interested in video I don't think there is any compelling reason to upgrade. Are others of you in the same camp? I just LUV my X-T2 and the images I get.

Plenty of reasons to upgrade if you can make use of the improved AF-C, extended battery life, up to date video recording specs, and IBIS.

If you're happy with what you have, keep on keeping on.

I upgraded to the XT-3 and find the AF is an improvement with a very small sacrifice in ISO performance. I tend to switch cameras a lot. The XT-2 going into low light and XT-3 going into action shots.

I look at the specs for the XT-4 and I am not impressed. It is a great camcorder, but realistically (IMHO) it's simply a camcorder version of the XT-3. The IBIS really helps video and so does the new batteries. I understand there are some AF improvements. The Flippy Screen is great for vlogging but for anything else a total abomination. I will NEVER purchase any camera with such an abomination hanging off the side. At the moment my plan is to stick with my XT-2 & XT-3 until Fuji starts building cameras again.

IBIS helps a bunch for some non-OIS lenses for stills as well like the 16-55 and 90.

In general, you should always skip a gen when upgrading tech.

Hi Bill,

I do agree with the two posters above about improved AF-C performance with the T3. I have both, T2 and 3, and the 3 does perform better, but IMO it's not a deal breaker unless you do a lot of BIF photography.

My T2 is perfectly capable, and I always enjoy using it. Like you, I have no real interest in video. Hope that helps.

I upgraded from the T2 to the T4 primarily for IBIS, which has been great. In addition what people mentioned above, there's a lot of quality of life improvements I noticed from upgrading (never tried the T3, so some of these probably apply to that one too):

1) The buttons are all much clicky-er on the T4 than on my T2.
2) There is now a 2 axis level instead of just the horizontal one
3) When shooting raw only and going to zoom on the focus point, you now get the full zoom in; on my T2, the zoom would be a good bit less magnification. On the T2, I'd have to shoot raw+jpeg just so I can critically check focus.
4) The new battery is nice not just because of the increased capacity but the distinct shape. I can't count how many times I put in the old Fuji battery and realize I had it in the wrong orientation since it's an almost perfect rectangular box.
5) The new cameras support Bluetooth and using the app on your phone, you get access to a remote trigger that supports bulb shooting; that's one less thing for me to remember to carry.
6) The new cameras have USB Type C instead of micro, which is nice for traveling if you already use Type C hardware.
7) The shutter on the T4 is much quieter than the T2. You also get access to electronic front curtain.

If you mainly care about image quality though, then it's probably not worth upgrading.

I just re-acquired an XT2 w/VG, because it is a very, very solid body. Its fabulous. It isn't the latest and greatest, but where I am in life, its pretty perfect. I had been holding out for an Xpro3, but it just won't work for me. IBIS is pretty fabulous, and it is tempting me. It is particularly great with OIS in conjunction. Myself, I will be holding out for the XT5, or for the XT4's to hit the used market in a year or two, or when they get deep discounts near EOL.

At one point I had an X-H1 and and X-T2. I sold the X-H1. It's a great camera, but I enjoyed using the X-T2 more for some reason.

Interesting as I had the opposite experience with X-T3 and X-H1.

Happy X-T2 user here

I won't upgrade because:
- I don't do video
- I use single shot AF almost 100%, so no need for better AF-C
- the image quality difference between the X-T2 and newer models is small
- IBIS is interesting, but I still manage to get sharp handheld images (for the photography I do, including night shooting) and for just IBIS I don't want to spend $$$

I think the X-T3/T4 are great cameras but for my use case the improvements were not important enough.

By the way, I also had the X-T1. My main reasons for upgrading were: higher resolution, the joystick for AF point selection and ISO dial lock button staying in position.

I just "upgraded" from an X T2 to a T4.

About 18 months ago, after deciding to downsize, and several months of looking at smaller options to FF DSLR's and heavy lenses, I decided to go with Fuji X T body style. Reputation for very nice glass, the external controls, and JPG's, thinking I may want the option to get away from RAW as well.

Took advantage of the great deals on the T2, post T3 launch: 18-55mm kit, plus 14mm f2.8. Was leaning to go prime.

Came to 2 conclusions: 1) I prefer zooms, and 2). am willing to compromise on weightsize and go with a 16-55 and 55-200.

The T4 makes sense to me for these reasons:
1. Never liked using tripods ... so IBIS can help off-set the 16-55 lack of IOS. I used Nikon and Canon 24-70 f2.8's, pre-image stabilization, and while I had few issues, I can see the value of IS for low light even on that range zoom. I really like shooting in natural light, often late in the day, at night on the street, and indoors.
2. Improved EVF, to my eyes, feels larger and smoother.
3. Improved AF, with full understanding of what that means. I.e. this is an evolutionary improvement on a camera that is not a necessarily designed for fast action shooting. That's not my thing; tf it was, I would not have gone with Fuji.
4. Skipped a generation testing the waters; now that I'm "all in", I'll start with the latest and hold for at least a few generations.

T4 compromises (it's always comes down to compromises):
1. The "flippy" screen. I much prefer the prior screen: feels stronger, more durable (metal), and more natural. While I understand why vloggers would like that, this is after all a camera, as far as form factor, so if I were into that kind of thing, I'd buy a camcorder. But I don't shoot video, so what I think on the subject is moot.
2. More on the floppy screen: to out into context, I've never given any though to using the screen to shoot, so never cared about this feature. The first time I used this on there T2 was at a Red Sox game. Probably used this a half dozen times at best. So in reality, for me, for something I may use a hand full of times, I can probably make do with the floppy screen.
3. Heavier, but to put in perspective, these numbers seen like a lot but IMHO are negligible compared to DSLR's. The T4 and 16-55 combined feels to me like less that a Nikon 24-70 by itself.

I really liked the T2, and it would have worked fine for what I need. The images are outstanding, and as others have said, perhaps a shade better than the T3T4. Sure, Sony FF's and Nikon mirrorless have an edge there. But I'm not a pro or amature, just a hobbyist, so I'm not getting paid or enlarging prints etc. On the scale I view and share, the APS-C sensor vs FF is IMHO moot. The build quality and feel IMHO of these X's is solid; many alternatives feel more plastic to me.

I'd say the key thing for me is the IBIS and decision on making the 16-55 the main lens in my kit. Many have commented that combination of IBIS in the H1 and that lens has been very helpful.

I would have stayed with the T2 if not for IBIS.

The new thing is almost always "better" than the old thing in objective terms, but...

... the questions are how much better will it be for me and what I do, and at what cost?

If the XT2 still does what you need it to do and you don't feel constrained by it, there's really no reason to get the newer models.

If we ask the same question about non-camera purchases, the logic starts to be even clearer, I think. When a new model of a car comes out, we don't necessarily unload the current car and replace it. We continue to use the current car while it provides good service, eventually replacing it when the cost of the new purchase makes sense when compared to how well the car serves us. Same with computers, sound systems, furniture, all kinds of stuff.

Do newer cameras improve on the older models? Yes, usually.

Does that mean that we need to get the newer model? Usually no.

I sold my x-T2 and purchased an H1. Like you “where I am in life” the IBIS and focus system of the H1 is perfect for what I photograph. No need for an X3 or x4 till they get deeply discounted or H1 dies.

I was in this boat too. Sold my X-T2 and got an X-H1 and regretted selling my X-T2 because I didn't feel like it was worth the extra money spent. So I sold my X-H1 got my X-T2 back for an awesome deal. But looking back at it now I really took the IBIS for granted. It was so awesome with the 16-55 2.8 I mean a total beast. The prices of X-H1s right now are insane and you will love the IBIS. You get an X-H1 with Grip for 750 which is bananas.

Definitely depends on the type of shooter, size of hands, how much they care about ergos, etc.

I hated the XT-2 ergos and think the X-H1 is one of the most comfortable cameras ever created. Many people feel the exact opposite.

The IBIS is irreplaceable IMO though.

The fact is they both take identical pictures if you removed IBIS from the equation, so you can't really go wrong.

I also loved the feeling of the X-H1, I am thinking of grabbing one a long side my X-T2 then eventually replace my X-T2 with a X-T3.
