p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Mite on Female Peregrine Falcon

I have been monitoring and photographing a pair of peregrine falcons before they mated, during their mating process until the eggs hatched 2 weeks ago. This momma of 3 chicks and she was enjoying the morning sun, it seems. The image itself is fine and it shows a little bit more than a simple perch but not much action really. I was looking at the feather pattern on my monitor closely earlier today and I saw a mite on her right wing! The first image was already cropped some but the second one was cropped significantly to show the mite. It is in the 3rd row of feathers from above. I never knew that mites do plague falcons...

Thanks for looking and please feel free to leave any feedback,
Joshua

that's what is called nit picking, Joshua. Or is it mite picking.
Great find, my friend.

Great shot, as usual. Yes, even hummingbirds get mites, mostly unhealthy hummers. When banding hummers they check for mites.

The first is excellent Joshua. If the second were sharper it would be a wonderful abstract.

Thank you very much, Morris! The second image was a large crop of the first and as you can see from the first image, the focus was on the eye of the female falcon, the way it was intended. The wing is barely in the DOF but transition is gradual, of course. But I see your point though. FYI, the image was captured using a 24MP camera; had a 61MP full frame sensor been used, it would have been rendered with more details.

Thank you very much, Bobby! I didn’t either but I wanted to look at the feather pattern closely and that’s when I discovered the mite. No, I wasn’t pixel peeping .
