Imagemaster, I’m still amazed how well your images stand up with the 2x converter MC-20 on what isn’t a particularly fast lens to start with.

On the cedar wax wing my first thought was that the image looks soft. Then I zoomed in. There's something about those birds that, to me, all images of them look soft.

I'm going to have to revisit some of my pictures.

There seem to be many photographers that expect feather details to look the same with all birds. Hold a waxwing in one hand and a robin in the other hand, and you would see the waxwing has finer feathers. As a result, the feathers of waxwings photograph more like fur.

Then there are photographers that over-sharpen those kinds of feathers, or fur, to the point where they end up looking harsh and wirey. God forbid that those feathers or fur should look soft like they do in reality.

I am not keen to use the 2x on the 100-400 unless I have decent light, otherwise I can't use fast enough shutter speeds and low enough ISO's.

Well stated. Thank you.

This is a slight aside to this wonderful thread since the people in this thread know how to get their cameras to focus. I bought an E-M1mk2 and have a 100-400 and 1.4tc. My quandary has been with the setting of the number of active AF squares. I set up 2 scenarios in my custom settings, one with the 5x5 and the other with the whole screen reactive. Totally disappointing. Yes, i would get some in focus for BIF, but on static subjects, it was useless. Then I tried the smaller 4 square. I tried them all on flying mallards, since that is the only target available. 4 square worked. The others failed miserably in comparison. Then a mature bald eagle showed up. It perched at a ridiculously close distance and I was getting head shots. Then it took off and I got a whole sequence of in focus shots in flight against a tough background. The other patterns will work, but only against the sky. I am wondering about the AF patterns that others use.

Try using the settings shown in this video. NOTE what he says about shooting in LOW fps versus HIgh fps at around the 10-minute mark.

In HIGH mode, there is no Continuous AF. Focus locks on the first frame.

Use LOW mode if you want Continuous AF.

Would it be possible for you to share some good images and some of the rejects, so we could have an idea of the BG that you are dealing with?

Thank you for the suggestion of the YouTube video. I have watched multiple videos and they were basically useless. I had watched the video previously, but now it matches what I have empirically come up with. Cluster AF does not work. 5x5 is somewhat useful, but not as useful as the 5 square.
I have decided to leave the tc on. Yes the ISO goes up but it does not seem to slow up the process and focus is great.

All the different cluster AF options work depending on the subject. Many of the AF failures are the fault of the photographers, not the camera. If you can’t get the AF point(s) on the subject and keep them on the subject, it is hardly the fault of the camera. And birds in flight are one of the hardest subjects to attain focus on and keep it on.

The AF takes a noticeable hit to AF with the TC, and a slight loss of IQ.

There is no 5 square. Maybe 5 star.

I had 2 opportunities to shoot eagles taking or attempting to take ducks. The eagles were distant. I shot the the first with the 5 star. There were multiple in focus shots. Later I switched to 5x5 and shot another eagle attempting to take a duck. They were not in focus. It would seem to me to be a matter of precision. You are correct. It is not the camera’s fault. It is how you use the tool. I am impressed with the tc. If there is a loss of iq and speed, so be it. It is going to stay on. I wouldn’t have gotten sharp shots of a distant eagle carrying off a duck by it’s neck otherwise. The YouTube video has given me some other ideas to try. Thank you for that.

Has anyone seen any deals on this lens through something like Greentoe or and education discount? Thinking about one for my wife, and she would qualify for the EDU discount.

I was a very loyal Greentoe customer but not for a few years.
The discounts have not been worth the delays/poor customer service I've experienced.

Greentoe, in an attempt to get me to offer more, told me that if you offer a low price it goes to fewer retailers. So you need to offer a high price to reach more retailers, but that negates the entire reason to use Greentoe and deal with the middleman.

It's a very good lens.
I've seen a few videos of what this can do SOOC, which is my benchmark for lenses.

I preordered and paid retail, and it arrived ahead of the expected release date. As much as any of us hate to pay more than is necessary, I don't mind since I have been able to use this lens a lot (although we had air quality issues at first).

I'm glad to see the price has dropped a little so others can try it out.
