p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Best FL lens for Portrait/Street/Candid photography

Hello! I've recently traded my Canon SL1 w/ 18-55mm and 55-250mm lenses for a A7iii with a Sony 85 1.8, Rokinion 35 1.4 and Caon 50mm with Sony adapter. I always wanted to shoot more portraits but now that my lens aren't wide ranging I'm not sure which FL I need.

What lens do you run around with? Any preference on brands (Zeiss, Sigma, Tamron is a brand my dad swears by)?

I've been told 16-35/35/50 are ideal walk arounds.

Thank you!

I've always found 35mm to work very well for me. Zooms; not so much.

My walk about lens is a 24-120 for my hip shooting style. Starting out I had it set at 35mm, but with practice and my aim getting better, I now set it at 50mm. The zoom gives me the reach when I need it for action a bit farther away.

When street shooting the emphasis is on timing / subject / composition. No matter what you do, to get that particular shot, some are going to be a bit blurry/grainy (shooting auto ISO). When choosing a lens you want something that focuses as fast as you think. I have examples when 1/6 sec was the difference between THE shot and NOT.

In terms of DOF I find f5.6 provides good separation between subject and background YMMV. I open it up towards evening. When walking at night I often switch to my 50mm f1.8, but often shoot at f2.0 or higher.

Lens selection is personal and it should be whatever you feel comfortable with and like the images it generates. The style of different individuals varies quite widely. In other words, you should make the call yourself based on your experience and don't rely on somebody else's choice. You have 3 lenses to start out with. There you go.
