I have a monopod for my 200-600 and it always ends up tossed to the side, as I get frustrated with it's limitations, and I raise the iso and hand hold. I want it to work, but I struggle. It could just be me and I have not been able to master.
A monopod is not a perfect solution for all situations. Like everything else, it's a compromise. A monopod is most helpful when I'm working along a constant vertical plane (i.e. long lens and field sports). For any vertical motion a good tilting head helps but it is still "challenging" at best. Per my earlier note, if you're panning vertically the eyepiece end of the load will be moving up and down. So you have to squat up and down to stay behind the camera. So you can either stand up straight and lift the camera up and down. Or you can let the monopod hold the camera while you lift yourself up and down. Pick your poison.
