p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Leucistic Great Horned Owl - Heading Out

I wasn't sure if this owl would come out before it either got too dark or I froze to death - but happily she gave me the opportunity!
I would welcome CC especially for the post processing - it was cloudy and close to sunset, flat light. I may have sacrificed some contrast for detail. Any tips are welcome.

The owl is posing nicely for you. Excellent shots.

Thank you. She came out pretty quick - I asked her to stand on the edge and look around a while and preen or something, but she declined.

I lowered the Highlights and the White, raised the Shadows and just a touch of sharpening in Lightroom.

Thanks. I wonder perhaps about somewhere between the two. I think your edit, is darker than she looks in real life. She's pretty white. But I might get a bit more detail out of it.

I had chosen to not really raise shadows, because they seemed to give more detail in her feathers. But I will play with it again. The cavity looked practically black at that time of day, so I didn't worry about that.

I have a tendency to edit too dark, so try to make myself aware of it and try to make sure things are bright enough. But I think I went too far this time - I will revisit it.

Thank you.

Great work Tracy. I wonder how the rock wound up on the branch in the last shot ~ Ron

Thank you.

I had wondered about that rock too. It has been there a long time - I checked back to my photos over 1 1/2 months ago, and it was there back then. I don't know before that.

I have heard rumors of people harassing that owl, as unfortunately the nest site gets discovered by more people. Could someone have thrown it up there trying to get the owl to be active?

Or, maybe more benignly, kids do go past that area, maybe they just threw rocks at a hole without the owl being there. I hope something more like this is the case.

From experience I can tell you, people throw rocks so they can make the owls move. Sad but true.

I love the images - what a great set, Tracy! I have not seen any leucistic owl, let alone photographed it. The expression of the chick in the last image without mom is priceless.

Sadly, I guess that is most likely.

She is the only one I have ever seen - thank you.

The little baby did make me laugh. Poor little lonely guy.

I agree with all the previous comments but what made the shot for me was the Sycamore bark blending with the owl.

It is a beautiful tree. I think often the background really makes or breaks a photo. I was very lucky in this case.
