I decided to drive two hours south to the Middle Fork River Forest Preserve near Rankin, Illinois Tuesday evening to shoot the Lyrid meteor shower. While I was prepared to socially isolate, nobody else was at Illinois' only dark-sky park that evening. I set up my Canon 5Dmk4 on a Vixen Polarie tracker aimed at the radiant shooting 20 second frames at ISO 1600 for 20 seconds with a Sigma 36mm lens at f1.4. Because it was 37 degrees for a low, I set my alarm and got out of my sleeping bag in the car every hour from 10 pm until 4:30 am to check and replace batteries. 9 out of over 1,000 frames had meteors.
The shot is a composite with two sky layers averaged to decrease noise. The meteors were copied, pasted and aligned to the base. The diagonal hazy area in the lower left is part of the Milky Way. The large, bright star to the left of center is Vega, part of the constellation Lyra. The meteor shower radiant is roughly in the center of the image. Thanks for looking.
