A fascinating story documented with fine pics, Tony. We followed a banding program on Alabama's gulf coast for several years. Really something every bird lover should try to see. We had a bander trap and band a wayward Rufous at our Arkansas home several winters ago. The process was very similar to what you describe except they used a woman's nylon "footie" as a straight jacket.

Interesting photos and information! Thanks for posting them.
I am sure you miss the birds and the banding. 660 is a lot of hummers.

I am impressed with the work this group did, tagging so many hummers. The images documenting the process are excellent. Kudos to you and the group, Tony!

Thanks Tony for the info...with northern migration of Anna's to the NW, it would be interesting to see how the numbers have changed. My yard only had rufouses in the past, now mostly Annas.

Thanks. To the best of my knowledge, Anna's Hummers in the Pacific Northwest do not migrate. They stay on Vancouver Island all year. When the Rufous arrive, they are in greater numbers and more aggressive, so many of the Anna's just move elsewhere around the island until the Rufous depart in July.

I live in Bend & we have in the last few years seen Anna's overwinter which means taking tempertures to 0 or below degree F. It is a pain to keep the feeders from freezing but if the sun comes out, they will feed. Starting about now, the rufouses will arrive but at least in my neighborhood, the predominate species will be the Annas whereas they were really rare less than 10 years ago. I had a male Anna last year who wouldn't let the rufouses near which is against the standard wisdom. As far as yearly migrating from the south, the question with Annas is still up in the air.
