I created a large "portfolio book" (11" x 17" pages) with the ability to easily add/delete pages as necessary. I printed the pages on both sides of double-sided paper separated by a sheet of translucent tracing paper. While the photos or not "on display," they're readily available to show.

Bob, have you looked at metallic prints latterly at Costco? Metallic used to be most expensive, but now it is cheaper than acrylic. I tried 3 images. They are amazing. Try it you will like it!

I have a three prong aporoach.

Firstly I do make large prints to display on my walls throughout the house. Having proper lighting onto the prints really puts them into a total different league...well worth looking into. Most rooms in the house has at least one of my prints including the bathrooms and bedrooms.

Secondly I make coffee table books which are stacked in my living room. They are a real hit with guests, especially the travel oriented books.

Thirdly, I make 12x18 prints from many of my images and store them in print portfolios. Again guests love holding and viewing prints up close.

I take images to make prints. I done this when shooting film and continue when shooting digital. I personally don't like viewing images on an LCD device as they just don't have that character that a print possesses. With prints, you choose the paper and frame to enhance the print...something that just does not happen the same with digital displays.

I print my favorites as large as my printer will allow. Some I frame and hang, and some I store for later viewing.

A firmware update to my printer a few months ago increased the length I can print from 26.something inches to about 47 inches. This enables me to print panoramas much larger than I could print before.

The biggest print I ever made at home was an 8x5 grid of 8x10" prints that I taped together (from the back side) with packing tape, for an overall size of 40 inches by almost 80 inches. It worked surprisingly well.

For those who make coffee table books -- how do you do it? Send images to a service that prints books? Or do you construct the books yourself? Whatever the answer, do you have recommendations for services or supplies for doing it yourself?

I’ve made a number of 3/8” (thickness) acrylic prints, the largest one being 40” x 22.5” for $500.

I use a lab called Pitko that has a book layout editor which allows me to fully customize my book. It's not the cheapest but the quality is second to none. I've tried Mypublisher and Adorama...second class to Pitko books.

I tried Googling Pitko, but couldn’t find that exact name in a way related to photo printing. I did find Pikto (“k” before “t”), which I assume is the business you’re referring to.
