That was a surprise to me as well. My main concern is OOF rendering. I dislike the 28-75's harsh transition zone but perhaps Tamron improved with this lens?

Weird focal lengths and cheap build quality.

The price reflects the design though, so they will sell well.

Not a fan of the f2.8 GM size and the f4 G aperture. So this is a compromise I will accept. Preordered.

I think it's pretty unfair to call Tamron FE zoom lineup build quality cheap.
Sure, it's not metal but I don't see anything wrong with my 28-75 (didn't try hitting stuff with it though)

I would much prefer 1:2 magnification at the long end. 180 macro option would have been awesome.

Tamron lenses come with a six year warranty in the USA. That is way longer than any other manufacturer. I've never had a Tamron lens fail on me.

It's a good proposition at $1199, not so much however at €1500. That makes it at least a $430 premium for Europeans. Depending on your shooting it might introduce more competition at that price-point, from say a 135GM as well as some used lenses that were originally supposed to be twice as expensive as the 70-180.
I'm very curious how it'll perform and what in-depth reviews will make of it. I'm with Fred on this one hoping that they improved on some of the 28-75's optical quirks and make a more solid all-around performance for the 70-180.

Don't get rid of your dedicated macro lenses just yet:

"When working with manual focus at the 70mm focal length position, it is possible to focus as closely as 10.6" with a 1:2 maximum magnification ratio, however peripheral image quality may be reduced."

Yes, I also think 1500e is a bit too steep, but maybe the actual price will be a bit lower once the lens shows up in stores. If it stays this way, I think I'll stick to 135mm prime as I have one already...

Yeah it hurts, I don't buy new UK stock unless it is on sale and price is comparable. Otherwise used would be fine for me downside is late to the party.

I will almost certainly buy this eventually, and thought I'd preorder too, but I can't really plop down $1200 right now in good conscience. However, I'm sure I'll have one before the end of the year.

Its a lottery, i've just done some research and a lot of prices are comparable when you convert the gbp price to usd and add our tax. Some cases were paying less (Voigtlander especially), some cases were paying more. This one currently falls in the latter case.
