... just to demonstrate the value of a backup ...
I have a "dual" backup system for my photos, a 6 TB NAS, and burning DVDs and (these days) Blu-Ray disks. I should have a third "offsite" backup, but I figure if my house gets destroy so badly my local backups are lost, I've got way more serious problems than my photography hobby.
I had been seeing "strange" behavior from one of my hard drives (not one I store photos on) for a few weeks, and just before my employer told everyone to work from home (a few days before the local government made it mandatory), I ran some tests that confirmed the drive was failing and ordeedr a replacement. It arrived a couple days later. I was fortunate to be able to copy most of the data from the failed drive onto my 3 TB primary photo storage drive that had lots of free space, and I had backups of data that I couldn't copy.
Based on the size of the new drive and my other, still working, drives, I decided, rather than replacing the failed 1 TB drive with the replacement 2 TB drive I would move the data from my nearly full 1.5 TB drive, to the replacement drive and use the 1.5 TB drive to replace the failed 1 TB drive. I spent most of a day opening up my computer several times to remove/add drives and rebooting to copy data from its original location to its new location. I was almost done when my computer failed to boot (even the BIOS screen didn't appear. While trying to remove the coin cell batter from the motherboard to reset the BIOS, I broke the battery socket, rendering the computer unusable. A replacement has been ordered, but isn't schedule to arrive until the 17th. I ran out and purchased a 2-drive USB dock, so along with the 1-drive USB dock I already had I was able to temporarily connect all the drives to my "beefy" work laptop. Unfortunately, I discovered that with all the data copying I somehow clobbered my 3 TB primary photo storage drive that I was using as temporary storage space during this process. I'm not sure exactly how that happened, but obviously I mad a mistake.
That's a long story to demonstrate why I'm really happy I have multiple backups of all my images. It will take a little time, but once my replacement computer arrives, I'm confident I will be able to restore my photo storage drive.
PS, if that's not enough, a few days later I attempted a repair (remove and clean chocolate sauce from the keyboard) of my laptop, and, according the repair shop to took it to, in the process of reassembling it I shorted out the system board, making it irreparable. This sheltering in place is turning out to be very expensive , not that I have anyone to blame but myself.
