I was thinking about upgrading from to an x100v my 8yo x100 but browsing BH used they have an excellent XP3 for $1400. I had an XPRO2 that I loved but sold it when I went all Sony and kind of miss it. I had all the large 1.4 primes so when it came to grabbing a camera I would grab the Sony as it balanced better but always loved shooting with it.

That terrible, terrible back screen. Good for shooting waist level and not much else. You would be better off with an Xpro2.

Done.

Lol. Actually I don’t even use the screen so that’s probably the only plus side.

I mean, other than the screen the X100V is basically an X-Pro3 with a fixed lens. Just buy it. I adore mine.

If you don't take a lot of videos, don't use the back screen much, and want interchangeable lenses, the X-Pro3 is pretty great. When using the viewfinder, just press the play or menu button and you don't need to flipping the screen. I really don't get what people hate about the X-Pro3 much. Then again I see all these "pros" on YouTube taking pictures almost exclusively using the back screen.

Because they went out of their way and put form over function so hipsters could pretend they are using a rangefinder?

Everyone's financial situation is different but I've noticed the Fuji camera bodies aren't holding their value very well making it sting a bit to upgrade unless you stay a generation behind and buy used, Not everyone's cup of tea I know. I bought my X-T2 brand new and less than 2 years later could only get $600 for it used and it was in great condition with all the original items/box. I like the idea of a minty used Xpro2 if you like the rangefinder type and still have any of your 1.4 primes. I've "rebought" cameras I regretted selling and no harm in that.

If the idea is to have a very basic, small, no frills camera with a single focal length lens... then the x100v seems like the better bet. Did you love the old x100? Or did it sort of fall by the wayside? If the former... x100v. If the latter... you probably still won’t be happy with that type of camera.

If you want the xPro-style body I would get the XPro2. There is virtually no advantage to the 3, and the reaction to the oddball rear screen design has been less than universally positive.

Note that if you like the large aperture primes they will intrude into the OVF view. The XT line may be better for those.

How is it form over function? I like the way the screen on the X-Pro3 can be used for waist level shooting and I like that the hidden screen protects it when not in use. Yes, for people that use the back screen extensively, it's not the camera for you. But that doesn't mean it's form over function.

Because all the positive functions you talk about with the screen can be handled more elegantly with other screen options that don't also cripple the other usefulness of the screen. The X-T series already had a dual flip screen that offered way more functionality. If you want that functionality with the ability to fold the screen away, a fully articulated screen can do all of that.

The X-Pro 3 screen works well for waist level shooting....and that's it. The screen on the X-T3 works well for waist level shooting, up high shooting, vertical low level shooting, and viewing on the rear screen on a tripod. None of which can be done on the X-Pro.

The fact you can't even view the rear screen on a tripod for the most part is just insane.

I've owned the X-T1, X-T2, and X-T3. If the X-Pro3 is not for you that's fine. But this complete dismal of the camera by some people because it's not for them is the is the normal internet self centered attitude. I have no interest in Leica's because I think the true rangefinder method of focusing is not for me. But I don't go around telling people using them that their camera is insane.

It's fine if the X-Pro 3 works for you and you enjoy it. But objectively they went for form over function on the rear screen. To deny that is simply ignoring reality. A lot of people might like that...a TON will not.

For me, it killed any chance I would buy the camera, and I was actually very much interested in it before announcement. And, so fine, they lost a sale from me, and didn't for others, and that's fine. But they still chose form over function on the rear screen...it's a design that is intentionally self limiting in order to provide a bit of retro charm, and actually decreased general functionality over the previous model. (yes, due to the limitations, I'd view the rear screen on the X-Pro 3 as less functional in day to day use than the fixed screen of the X-Pro 2.)

If they announced that the X-Pro 4 will only have a center focus point because that's all that rangefinders can use to determine focus, would you also be OK with that? Or would you consider that a choice that chooses form over function?

Not really wanting to get into an argument. The camera is not for you and that's fine. But that is not the definition of form over function. That's narrowing the scope of the product, which is fine if that is your intent. As you said, lots of people will not like that. The flip to the side screen of the X-T4 is not for me. But that is because I have no interest in video. I'm sure there will be lots of people that will like that but I'm not one of them.

I also do not care for fully articulated screens like the X-T4...I much prefer to shoot low with the screen in line with the lens. But the X-T4 also doesn't remove functionality, it just does it in a way that isn't to my liking.

I would not try to talk you out of the XP3. I like mine. However, it is different enough that you might want to rent it for a week. You also have a good (if slightly outdated) sense of the X100V. The rental would give you a chance to decide what works for you.

Actually the back screen is not terrible... I personally find the 3 to better then the 2 in a lot of ways. Don’t get me wrong, the 2 is a great camera (had it for a couple years) and is still a good choice today but I prefer the 3.

Let me try to explain why many of us (YMMV) do not like what Fujifilm did with the XPro3. It is a combination of taking away useful functionality that was on the XPro2, adding something in a way that seems ill-conceived, and the tone-deaf way that the camera was marketed.

My apologies for the length of this post, but I'd like to just try to lay this out fully.

Taking away useful functionality.

1. Unless I'm missing something, a feature that allowed users to change the magnification of the OVF view to accommodate shorter/longer focal lengths has been removed from the XPro3. This means that you can't effectively use the OVF with wider angles of view (I think the 14mm falls into this category) or use it as well lenses with longer focal lengths, where the framing rectangle becomes very small.

2.There is no "always there" rear display. Although we may not object to (and may even welcome) the addition of a fold-out screen, many of us who rarely use the rear screen for framing photographs do on occasion:

- find it useful for that very purpose.

- prefer to get quick access to menu settings on the rear screen rather than holding the camera to our eyes and trying to adjust settings while doing so or taking the time to flip out the screen.

- find it useful to quickly review photographs without having to flip open a screen — to check framing, double-check exposure, make sure that we got what we thought we got, confirm the effect of aperture on DOF, etc.

- show shots to our subjects quickly on the rear screen to get them engaged in the process and to reassure them.

Instead, we now have a tiny square screen that imitates the old-school film box end holders to remind us what ISO we are using... which we already know by looking at the ISO setting knob or by looking in the viewfinder. (By the way, the notion that real photographers don't have any use for rear screens is countered by the inclusion of this small rear screen on the XPro3.

As we'll see, the belief by a very small number of photographers that having a rear screen makes you a lesser photographer is nonsensical... but if you think so you can simply disable the display.

Ill-conceived design

Fujifilm (in other cameras they produce) and other manufacturers have implemented much better designs of deployable screens. For example, some will work in the following modes:

- stowed and facing the back (in the position found on the XPro2).

- flipped around backwards to show no screen (satisfying the no screen is better crowd).

- folded out and facing up (for waist-level photography and things like macro photography).

- folded out and facing down (for shooting with the camera held overhead — very useful for street photography).

- folded out and facing forward (useful for group shots and some video work).

Fujifilm could either offer an optional display setting to show only a small square within the larger display to mimic the little square now on the XPro3... or they could place that information in a small always-on display on the top plate as they do on other models.

Tone-deaf marketing

Fujifilm's initial marketing of this camera focused largely on how "real" and "authentic" photographers would be freed-up by not having a rear screen to "distract" them from making great photographs. Virtually everyone sees through that nonsensical claim — at a minimum, it is patently obvious that many great photographs have been made using digital cameras that have rear screens. (And, again, you can turn it off. Or don't look at it.

Oh, yes, AND YOU CAN'T SEE THE REAR SCREEN ANYWAY WHEN YOU ARE LOOKING THROUGH THE VIEWFINDER.

Sorry for the all-caps, but really folks, the Emperor is entirely naked on this occasion! ;-)

None of us have anything against folks who prefer to not look at a rear screen. We wonder sometimes through why such folks think that the rest of us should have to lose camera functionality on their account.

As to the XPro2, it is really a very solid, reliable, functional camera. Image quality between the XPro2 and XPro3 will be virtually indistinguishable.

Feel free to get whatever camera you want folks. This is offered in the spirit of helping some of you understand why many of us think the XPro3 is not a worthy upgrade. Many, like me, were quite disappointed. We might well have considered moving to an improved XPro3, but we have decided that our XPro2 bodies are really just fine.

Take care,

Dan

I would encourage you to get the XP3. I've really enjoyed mine, 2 Dura Silvers. I do use the rear screen a lot for low shots, it's quick and easy to deploy. That has come in real handy using the 80mm for macro around the house recently. What lens do you plan to use with your XP3 first?
