A couple of days ago, the wife and I went for a walk in a canyon along a nature trail. It was late in the evening and as we sat on a bench I heard then saw this woodpecker in tree. I had my camera settings where I thought I could focus and get a good shot. I took several shots of the woodpecker and then moved about 3 to 4 feet to the right. As I held my D500 with the 500pf lens on it, I saw a bug flying around and the Golden Fronted Woodpecker was trying to catch it. The sun was behind to the left and the image of the woodpecker under exposed. I was able to adjust the exposure in post but not as good as I had hoped.
I had the camera set on spot metering with aperture priority with a 400 ISO. Also, I have the camera set with 25 point autofocus with back button autofocus and if I push and hold the function button it goes to single point autofocus.
The first image was taken before I moved to the right just a few feet. The two shots with the bug were after I moved and the final two shots were after making adjustment.
I'm a bit stymied why the photo's with the bug came out underexposed. As I saw the scene through the viewfinder, very quickly tried to adjust as I wanted to catch the bug. I already had the aperture at 5.6 but the exposure jumped to 1/6400th of a second. I knew the lighting had changed drastically in that three to four feet of shooting but I didn't think it change that much.
