p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · DEVA_ Windy Dunes

In anticipation of my upcoming visit to the park in a week, I've been posting pictures of previous visits. I am including both color and monochrome versions of the this picture.

Driving into the park early April 2019, I was met with strong winds, so I weighed my chances of getting sunset pictures of the dunes without damage to me or my camera. I drove up the road leading to the Grotto, which provided some relief from the blowing sand, but I was still buffeted by the gusty winds, which made for some uneasy moments sitting on a narrow ledge with splayed legs to steady myself. I rubbed my irritated eyes, held my breath and fired a few shots before having to quickly set my camera down, and grab the rock precipice I was on so as not to tumble off.

For scale, a fearless individual can be seen in the lower left of the picture.

That drive and scrambling to a ledge for that view is not fun. Great shot and I prefer the color.

So NICE!!! Congratulations on such a nice image!
I don't know if you see it, but there is an increasing graininess (noise) at the top and it decreases as the image goes downward. If it was mine I might consider just a little Luminance Noise Reduction graduated from the top down. Hope it is helpful.

Thanks for your advice. I'll try to reduce luminance. Part of the issue is the blowing sand which reflects the light increasing the luminance. But it's worth another try.

Mark, took your advice and played around with Luminance sliders. In my view, it did improve the picture, especially in the large dunes' shadow areas. I just ge a little nervous when I push the LR sliders towards either to Max or Min side as it can have unwanted effect that I don't see right away.

Now if I can just figure out how to upload editied version to this thread

Man, this really makes my brain hurt, in a good way. I've never been to any area with large sand dunes, ever in my life. The scaling of proportions from the larger dunes above to the smaller dunes below makes for an interesting illusion of depth.

The b&w might be a little more dramatic with more contrast, but the color version is outstanding. Well done!

Really cool shot, and having the walker at the bottom of the frame really gives it some scale! I prefer the color version.
