I'd like to request that someone getting a Mk3 do a quick comparison between the tripod based hi-res mode between it and the Mk2. It seems like something must have improved if they're willing to push 80mp jpg images out rather than the 50mp from the Mk2, but I'd like to see what.

Would also like to see if there's any change in how the tripod based hi-res mode handles motion, like a moving stream or waterfall.

After a couple of outings with the E-M1 III, I'm beginning to suspect that using the E-M1 II settings with the E-M1 III (which I did as a guide), might be not much better than when I see folks trying to set up their E-M1 II using their old Canon settings. Perhaps using the settings from the E-M1 X as a a guide might be more appropriate.

However, add to that, the new TruePic IX processor may be different than the E-M1 X and we may move even further away from the best performance settings of either.

With all that said, I would like to hear from someone who has now both the E-M1 X and the E-M1 III that might compare and contrast the settings in real world shooting.

Not in-camera jpgs, or at least not as far as Olympus's official marketing is concerned.

Edit: heck, the author of that site even has similar thoughts to me: "As a matter of fact, I would consider dropping the current 50MP format whenever this becomes technically feasible (i.e., 80MP file can be generated in-camera). Sooner or later it will."

I've been rolling 80mp raw files out of my Mk2 for a while now, what I'm curious about is whether the new processors and Olympus putting 80mp jpgs on their official marketing material for the Mk3 means noticeable improvement in the process and/or end result.

A few trial shots on a cloudy, rainy day.

First two shots were trying out Pro Capture Low on gulls flying with clams and dropping them on rocks to break them open.

Crocus shot was trying out High Res mode handheld.

I did that exact comparison today. From the same HHHR shot I compared the 50mpx JPEG and the 50mpx raw (converted to tif via Workspace) wit the 20mpx raw (also converted to tif in WS). Comparisons were done in Lightroom and Photoshop.

Doing a 1x1 pixel peep there was little difference, however we are comparing a much larger image with the HHHR file. So than I upsampled the non Hi Rez 20mpx file up to the size of the HHHR file and of course the difference was noticeable at 1x1. Than I downsampled the HHHR tif to the same size as the smaller 20mpx file and the difference, while less noticeable than was seen in the upscale comparison, was to me quite noticeable in that the downsampled HHHR took on a more 3D quality.

As you might expect the 50mpx JPEG, looked very good at the OOC size but didn’t hold up ad well to the downsizing for comparison.

As a side note, the WS conversion resulted in the usual 115mb tif file for the 20mpx version, while the 50mpx tif was 285mb. So, I’ll not be storing a lot of those conversions

Have not had the time or weather to do enough comparison testing yet. Of the few I have done, I see no appreciable difference whether I upsize the 20MP file or downsize the 50MP file to make both images equal size.

Thanks. It takes a drop in both sharpness and contrast from the 1.4x to my eye.
