To those that are wondering about the price, compare this to the Sony 90mm FE G Macro. I believe it's the same MSRP, and the aperture ring is a nice bonus for the landscape people. I think the price is fair, but it's really a question of focal length. Someone else mentioned that it's taking on the non-Sony 21's (Voigt, Loxia). It's not the focal length for me, so I won't be getting one, but the close focus on it looks super useful. I'm also looking forward to seeing people put this on APS-C--effectively will become the best native 28ish lens.

It's fine to have a slow (21CV/3.5), medium (21/2.8 Lox) and fast (20/1.8G) set of 20's - right?

Yes, three lenses per focal length is the limit. So you are still OK.

The Tokina Firin 20/2 AF and Nikon Z 20/1.8 are around same price.

I think this is pretty reasonable pricing from Sony, at least relative to Sony's usual pricing scheme.

This Appears to be a lot of lens and features for the cash. Flatness of field, flare resistance, and mid field rendering appear to be without much of a verdict though at this albeit very early stage.

Does it have low field curvature?

Sure it is. Heck I have more Wives than you have 20mm lenses. Wives cost way more...

Not a big fan of the sunstars it produces, sadly: https://www.albertdros.com/single-post/2020/02/16/Sony-20mm-f18-Hands-On-Review-Albert-Dros

Phew!

It looks like it has OK sun stars and OK flare/ghosting in the DPR images. The one pic inside the museum of flight with the sun star shows lots of ghosts, but that's likely pretty severe. There's another shot with the sun in the window without making a sun start and flare/contrast seems to hold up.

I would complain about there being no landscape-type shots with a blue sky and sun in the image, but that's a pretty rare thing in Seattle this time of year.

Does DPR have amateur photogs stalking their employees around Seattle (and other locations) just to see what gear they are carrying? Whenever I see the more recognizable DPR staff around town, they never seem to be carrying camera gear, which makes me wonder if they are in disguise when out and about testing unannounced gear

True. R. Sanyal is praising it.

"This lens has almost no detectable LoCA or fringing to speak of. This is pretty remarkable. Have a look above, sliding left to view feline hairs at 100%. Typically, backlit hairs will have magenta fringing and green fringing on hairs in front of, and behind, the plane of focus, respectively. But we see nothing of the sort."

It's an interesting first impression.

He writes "This lens has almost no detectable LoCA or fringing to speak of. That's pretty remarkable."

No detectable axial CA in a 20/1.8 lens...If that's really the case, it would be indeed remarkable.

No mans land is relative to the other lenses you have.
I don't have a 24mm as I'm not a fan of that focal length.

I do have a 16mm fisheye and a 35 or 40mm prime, so 20 or 21mm is perfectly in between for me regarding FOV with 2x-ish multiples between adjacent lenses (which is my personal rule).

I really like 20mm for landscapes as it allows me to get closer to my subject and still get a very wide perspective without much distortion compared to ultra wides. My favorite lens is still the Loxia 21/2.8 but I'm happy there are so many options for this focal length now.

The stars in the night shots seem OK to me:

Just sold my 28-75 and now have GM 24, CV 40 f1.2, and Sony 85 f1.8 as my small kit with the GM 135 available if additional reach is needed. This new 20mm f1.8 is tempting (GAS related) but I agree with the others that it might be too close to my GM 24 IMO.

How are you liking that small kit so far? Where my situation differs is I only have those two lenses 28-75 and sony 85 f1.8, so the wide end is completely open. The question is "Is 20mm too wide for wedding, event, portrait work?"
