As much as I'd like to have the best lens out there, I'm not willing to use a tripod.
I'm very lazy when using one. It's like the feet are in concrete. Once I set it up, I don't want to move.

In the last few years, I had some physical limitations show up, so even hand holding my 300f2.8 has become challenging.

You are right about the Canon stuff. I started the switch to Sony about 2 years ago, and it's time for most of the Canon stuff to go.

The Sony 200-600 is noticeably longer, fatter, and heavier than the Sony 100-400. For hand-holding, the 100-400 is a lot easier to manage. It also packs into a smaller package. It's about the same size and weight as the Canon 100-400 II.

I'm pretty sure I'll be able to handle a 200-600.
I'm not a small person, and I worked construction for 40 years.
At this time, I have a couple of parts that are wearing out, mainly my left shoulder, that's why the 300 gave me a little trouble last week.
I have the 100-400 that 90% of the time has a tc on.
Almost all of my cameras have a battery grip installed so I could shed a little weight by removing that.

The good news is, I have lots of time to figure this out.
Maybe Sony brings out a a7IV or the mythical a7000.
I'll probably know in a week if surgery is going to be required on the shoulder. (I've yet to have an MRI that didn't require it)
So at this point, everything is on hold.

Once again, thanks to all of you that commented.
Lots of good ideas for me to think about.

MRI came back with nothing way out of the ordinary, Doc says the cortisone shot and some physical therapy should make it more usable.

Looking through a bunch of shots on this board and in other spots, the a9 makes the most sense.
Scanning the Buy and Sell board for week, I found one that I liked, and should be here soon.

So how does the a9 work with the 100-400 and a 2x tc?
I do have a Sigma 150-600c, and a Canon 300 f2.8 and a couple of ways to get a 2x tc hooked up to that.
I have to try the different combos to see what will work where.

Thanks for the input.

Ok, here's the deal.

Let's say I have $3k buried in backyard.
I own 3 Sony cameras that are worth talking about.
The a7III, the a7RIII, and the a6400.
Also with those cameras, I have the Sony 100-400 with the 1.4 tc and the 2x tc.
Through in the Metabones 5 and the MC-11 to use my Sigma 150-600c lens. (good lens, but struggles in some areas)
I should also add that I still have my Canon 300 f2.8is and a 2x Canon tc. Great lens, not so much when adapted.

I'm looking at a used a9, a good price on an a7RIV, and the 200-600.

Where

Many people are using a7rIV for BIF now and if you are only spending 5-10% of your time with BIF I think it makes more sense over a used A9. The ability to crop and extend reach with 61mp vs 24 is too much to give up IMO.

The other thing I like on my IV vs my A9 is I can instantly push C2 for crop mode without taking the time to put a tc on the lens or dismount the lens in the field. Forgetting wildlife for a moment this has become extremely useful with my other lenses and other areas of photography, even more so than for wildlife.

The 200-600 G is a no brainer.

congrats on the a9, it's an amazing camera, using it with that sigma 150-600(and hopefully mc-11) will result in improved performance over doing it with other bodies... never tried the canon 2x tc with the 300/2.8.

if you need reach, a good copy of the 200-600/1.4x on the a9 is very functional, but you really have to work on technique to get steady pics at 840mm, even on a monopod... i saw improvement with letting my left hand rest on the end of the barrel, which you can do with that lens because it's internal zoom.

but a heavy video tripod, with a video head, made a huge difference, not only did it eliminate camera-induced motion blur, it also kept the horizon perfectly level 100% of the time, which makes post production quicker.

The canon 300 f/2.8 is ii was a fantastic performer on my Canon bodies with the 2x. Can't say how it or any long Canon lenses will perform on the a9 because I sold the body before the recent update of the MC-11 which made Canon long glass usable. My Canon 500 f/4 IS II + 1.4x tc works great on the a7riv. Agreed, the 200-600 works well and I had no trouble with it +- with the 1.4x tc on the a9 though am still struggling with the lens on my a7riv.
