If you could spec out a D850 update say a D851 what would you change?

For me I would like to see the following improvements:
Dual QXD/CFExpress card slots (remove the SD card)
Increase sensor to 55+ MP...60-65 would be amazing!
Increase buffer to handle full raw files of at least 40 images, prefer 70 plus.
Increase fps to 11 with grip and upgraded battery.
Improve high iso performance by 1-2 stops.
Improve low light focusing to D5 spec.
Increase selectable focus point area. I would like to see the usable points reach further to the edges.

What they could take away:
video...I could care less. I am happy with the DSLR being dedicated still cameras and invest video into Z bodies.

I think this would be the perfect camera. You could shoot in crop mode and have 25+ MP, big buffer and would be the best camera in the market.

What is your dream?

Personally I really hope they keep the pixel count down to the current 45mp. Otherwise, only thing I'd want is to use the same live view AF as the Z7 (like they did with the D780) and a USB-C port instead of the old USB type A, so I can use the same tethering cord for both the Z7 and D850. Otherwise, I think of the D850 as like a great white shark - it doesn't need to evolve much because it was born a beast

All of the above sounds great. Some of it is more likely than others.

The market has standardized on the Arca Swiss tripod plate design. I want to see Nikon build the Arca Swiss dovetail discretely into their camera bodies, on both the bottom and on the left side. I don't want to be forced to buy a heavy and bulky L-bracket anymore just to mount my camera to a tripod in the orientation I prefer.

I want a raw histogram and blinkies based on raw saturation, not JPG saturation. It kills me that not a single mainstream vendor has bothered to implement this (I hear PhaseOne has it in their $40k bodies). Camera makers still don't understand or respect the workflow of raw shooters. Why evaluate a histogram from a JPG that we're just going to throw away, or never even save to our cards in the first place? I know all the tricks to better approximate the raw histogram in the JPG, and they make the preview on the back of the camera look like crap. Let me shoot with a picture style and white balance I actually enjoy looking at, while still seeing the histogram & blinkies for the actual data I care about: the raw data.

The Fuji X100 rangefinder line has had a dual OVF/EVF viewfinder for at least 5 years. Want OVF? Flip a switch. Want EVF? Flip that switch again and an EVF moves up into place. The same should be built into every DSLR. Liveview should not force your eye away from the viewfinder and limit you to the back screen.

My phone can transmit data over wifi at over 400 megabits per second- it can probably do a lot better, but it's constrained by my fiber broadband. And yet transferring a raw file over my D850's wifi is hilariously slow and totally unusable (and my phone came to market before the D850!). Even wireless JPG tethering is too slow to use- I have to drop my JPGs to the smallest and lowest quality allowed just to get an image on my computer in a reasonable amount of time. Nikon needs to put modern Wifi chips in their cameras to support effortless and near-instant tethering. Wait times for snapbridge wireless transfers need to be under one second.

AF Fine-tuning should allow recording separate values for different zoom focal lengths, and should incorporate knowledge of the focus-shift behavior of Nikon's more exotic and fast lenses. Fine-tuning should be automated and effortless- aim a lens at a target, press the fine-tune button, and go pour a coffee while you await your results.

That's all I got for now!

Good idea about automating the AF fine tune. It seems such an obvious thing to automate. In addition to a calibration mode, it could also could continue to monitor the sharpness at the selected focus point after each photo is taken and make subtle tweaks to the AF calibration to fix. In other words a similar idea to the self calibration of the Nikon F5 shutter (and presumably all shutters since).

I would love to see a firmware update to provide usable medium and small Raw files. To avoid the very large files from the D850 I can get a slight reduction by shooting 12-bit Raw or going to 8-bit JPG files.

- D780 type of live-view focusing? (hoping there is no banding)
- Wider AF points

Otherwise, the D850 is essentially what the D810 was... the best DSLR money can buy. Even as it is now, it's just a stellar DSLR. Almost nothing needs to be improved.

My bet?

Z7 sensor with OSPDAF, CFExpress + SD, all the video updates for the Z7, D6 AF algorithms but only a single processor and some inanely stupid bit of decontenting that annoys everyone.

Going back and forward between D850 and Z7, what I really miss the most when using D850 is the
AF points coverage on Z7. Unfortunately, as I understand it, this is not going to be possible with the usual DSLR AF module. Going to 60mp, especially if using the same sensor as A7r IV has a significant trade off. If you shoot mostly at iso 64, you will love it. If you shoot at iso > 1600 regularly, may be not so much.

Honestly, I think any upgrade that D880 might bring to D850, it won't be huge. Better AF, buffer, FPS are pretty much the only area that we can always use more. Going from 46 to 60 MP is not really as big a deal in my opinion unless Nikon can maintain at least equal ISO performance (which is not the case with A7r IV). Otherwise, the usual video upgrade to make D880 on par with Z7 ( may be with no crop in 1080/120p if Nikon can increase bandwidth adequately).

I like the idea of the improved auto fine tune!

Acra Swiss is an interesting idea. I can't believe they don't do it on lens foots by now. I can't stand I spend all that money on a lens and first thing I have to do is buy a replacement foot.

This gets my vote, not having a 3rd party grip would round out the camera for me. Honestly... I wouldn't change anything about the camera. It does everything I want and so much more. There are number of features I've never even used but might one day. Alright.. one more thing... AF fine tune as mentioned above... with multiple adjustments like Canon offers.
I've thought about buying another one just to have collect dust until this one dies and I'll continue on, it really fits my shooting style... it's the best camera I've owned.

I’ll buy it if it’s Z mount compatible.
But we all know that ain’t gonna happen with D anything so no thanks.

Maybe they could fix the focus stacking - it is clumsy to use.

Give me the following and charge me whatever you want and I will take 2 of them.

Same MP as D850 with 1/2 stop better high ISO performance.
Up to 12 FPS
Dual CF Express or at least dual XQD slots with a better buffer of up to say 40 shots
Same AF as in the D5

And my number one thing I want improved over the D850 is better AF during peak action when shooting with the 1.4xiii. I find this to be the major flaw of the D850. It performs amazingly without the converter for peak action of says birds in flight. However when the 1.4xiii is attached to my 600f4e, I often miss the peak action. If they could make it as powerful as the D5 in this regard it would be a major game changer for me.

I would my camera the D850s. Compared to the D850, it would have

Only 5fps (battery grip doesnt add fps either)
Dual SD cards
Backlit Dual Gain 20 Megapixel Sensor with native ISO up to 100k, extensible to 400k

So basically it would be the D750 successor that I would actually want.

Oh well.

Similar to several posters above, I'd just like better ISO performance--preferably a full stop--and better AF. Leave the MPs alone. But I'd have to have the reworked shutter mechanism like that in the D5 if I were am going to pay money for a new DSLR.

Of course, all of the above, but, mainly, for me:

- Fully programmable buttons (not only AF) or, if you want, full settings recall on the press of one button
- An effective live view feature (for shooting ducks and loons near ground/water level), much like what has been announced for the D780
- Quieter mechanical shutter (not as important if LV is good)
