Anyone tried this adapter?

I'm considering buying one to allow me to use my three EF lenses with my Z7, but I haven't been able to find much in the way of reviews.

Any info would be appreciated.

I got this adapter with the new Z9 because all I have is Canon lenses (lots of them, and I don't mean to abandon the system). All my lenses seem to work fine, with one exception: the Sigma 14mm f/2.8 EX HSM did not work stopped down until I found that the adapter was not running the latest firmware (it had 1.50 while the most current at the moment is 1.70). After that, the issue seems to have been resolved.

I'm not entirely convinced about the adapter mechanics-wise for these three reasons:
1. It's not weather sealed. I know the "ass-gasket" as one Rockwell puts it is not panacea, but it gives some peace of mind.

2. The lenses fit very snugly, with noticeable resistance I might say. Hopefully it'll be "broken in" after a few... thousand... mountings/unmountings.
3. The little rubber cover for the micro-USB socket (and I thought my phone was the last device on the planet not to have migrated to USB-C...) gets undone if you look at it funny. It was immediately taped over after the firmware update, and that also allowed to cover the two suspect holes in the adapter's body that go God (and Fringer) only knows how deep into the body. These were formed after I unscrewed the tripod mounting... chunk... from the adapter since it interfered with holding the Z9 in portrait orientation.

All in all, seemingly a good product and I hope it will last.

Another lens tested, Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 VC. This unit may have a defective stabilization system from years of abuse, but the best results were really when I switched off in-lens IS and only relied on IBIS. Otherwise operates well.

I'll test a truly odd lens next up, the Tokina 10-17mm fisheye. Even if all goes well and then the camera doesn't lock me in DX mode, I expect it to be usable only at 16-17mm like it was when mounting it on something like 5D Mark II.

The Tokina 10-17mm fisheye also works, though the AF isn't super accurate (it never was for me on Canon, anyway), and the camera does not get forced into the DX mode. Of course, only 16-17mm settings are working fine, zoom out any more and the (fixed) hood starts appearing in the picture. If I were to use this body/lens combo for anything more than laughs, I'd probably just tape the zoom ring at 16mm and call it a day.

Thank you for notifying me that Fringer actually released the v1.70 firmware just a few days ago.

I also own this adapter for over a year now. It works like a charm and I have no issue recommending even for professional work.

The cons I can think of are:

1. No weather sealing
2. The mechanism to set focal length with fully manual lenses is super fiddly
3. Micro-USB, but at least it doesn't require docks and proprietary programs to upgrade firmware
4. No in-camera distortion/vignetting corrections. The lens name in EXIF data only gets the focal length and aperture (e.g. EF 135/2L is recorded as "135mm f/2G"), so you have to manually choose the correct lens profile in post.

Lenses I have tested I can remember off-hand:

* EF 16-35/4L
* EF 17-40/4L
* EF 24-105/4L
* EF 50/1.2L
* EF 70-200L II
* EF 135/2L
* Sigma 35/1.4 Art
* Sigma 18-35/1.8 Art (doesn't enforce APS-C/DX crop)
* Sigma 50-100/1.8 Art (doesn't enforce APS-C/DX crop)
* Tamron 100-400/4.5-6.3
* ...many other EF lenses I have borrowed and tested in the field and forgotten

Basically you can throw any recent EF lenses on it and expect it to work, even exotic ones with various tele-converter combination. The only one that did not work for me is the Yongnuo EF 100/2, but that one is very unstable even on some Canon DSLRs, so I think it is more of the lenses fault.

I went through 3 adapters for Canon to Nikon z use and found the Fotodiox the best. Fringer had too much play on the copy I had, tried the Altson which was worse. I primarily use the 3 Canon TS E lenses but have used the EF 24-70 withAF and found it usable.

Oh yes, the EXIF... But at least there are accurate records of which lens was used. Though I snickered when I saw the 100-400 referred to as "100-400/4.5" G... if only.

Today I tested the camera+adapter combo on assignment for the first time, even though it was an insignificant one. Used the Canon 16-35/4 and the Tamron 85/1.8, both worked like a charm with only a minor amount of misfocused shots (though the conditions were difficult).

P.S. Looks like the DX crop isn't enforced at all with the adapter... Though I'm yet to test it with a Canon EF-S lens.

Interesting. Actually I never took note of how it recorded the name for zoom lenses with variable apertures. Most of the zoom lenses I used on it are constant aperture except for that Tamron 100-400 which was my friend's. Maybe the Nikon's mount protocol doesn't allow the adapter to input arbitrary lens names because the Fringer EF-FX (to Fuji X-mount) does record the full name of the EF lens.

Not forcing a DX crop is a plus and adds flexibility to crop or use greater image circle in post. I hope Nikon doesn't even enforce it with their native DX lenses, or perhaps allow it to be configured in the settings. Maybe they are scared that people will find out some DX lenses actually have good FF coverage and end up not buying the more expensive FX version.

My copy of the Fringer has almost zero play on both mounts, but yeah it could be just copy variation and I just got lucky.

All variable aperture lenses are recorded like that... The EF 24-85 is "3.5G".

BTW I come from 1.3x crop - and will keep using a Canon body with one - and many APS-C lenses worked well with it. Finding and using these was a fun kind of sport for any Canon 1D user. Some reports are that a few designated APS-C lenses cover even FF with no hard vignetting, just the usual "soft" vignetting increased to noticeable but still tolerable levels (Sigma 30mm f/1.4 Art being one case).

Given the opportunity, I will test the Canon 18-135 STM which was a passable 135mm prime on APS-H.

I am just finding out about these adapters, I left Nikon to a Canon R6 based rig and have missed Nikon since I left. I am exploring getting a Z7ii to use my EF mount lenses. I miss the Nikon colors, lack of AA filter, better DR, and more affordable primes. I will keep the R6. I had been thinking of a used GFX50S but the Z7ii DR range is super close for MY needs (this is personal use/fun).

I've found two more lenses working without issue, Canon 24-70/4L IS and Tamron 100-400/4.5-6.3 VC. I also shot a whole assignment today with the 24L / Tamron 45 / 70-200/2.8L IS, and it appears all right. Guess it's safe to assume that everything works as good as native with this adapter, short of maybe something super exotic or old like my Sigma 14mm.

The adapter is really reliable. I use the Canon EF 16-35 f4 L on my Z6 and it works like a charm overall.

The only issue is the adapter adding noticeably to the lens' size but that kinda comes with the territory of adapting dSLR lenses.

When I can, I'll test a few more though, whatever I can lay my hands on.

Anyone having issues with AF? I bought one, but I can’t get any AF on my Z6ii or Z7ii.

I get the “F - -“ mark and can’t change the aperture. I can’t even press the shutter to take a photo.
