p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Nikon Z6, Z7 Refurb from B&H. Thoughts?

I have been thinking about picking up a body and was wondering if anyone here has any experience with those B&H refurbs?

Shutter count? I see they have a 90 day Nikon warranty.

Thanks

I have zero interest in mirrorless tech but you can 100% count on B&H. If you are unsatisfied they will do what it takes to see that you are.

The refurbs all come from Nikon, regardless as to who is selling them. The camera will most likely be fine, and could have a minimal shutter count, or a lot. It will come in a plain white Nikon box, at least the DSLR's did. Not sure how the Z6 or Z7 will be packed.

When I have bought in the past I look for the reputable dealer with the best price and warranty. Some dealers will give you an extended warranty (one year) if you buy from them.

The price looks fair, although the better deal was the Amazon Z7 + 27-70 f/4 around a week ago... But, it's gone now.

No problems ever with B&H other than holidays interfering with my timeline.

Picked up Refurbished D850 was like new in white box from Nikon Store.

From another NY seller I received a refurbished D810 in white box with issues but it was apparent that the box was previously opened and resealed between when it was sent from Nikon to the seller and when I received it. Nikon informed me that their white box should not look tampered with when you receive a refurbished body from a 3rd party as they are sealed at the factory.

I think a refurb is a good idea if the savings are adequate. The cameras have been out for more than a year, they have been discounted, and a refurb will put you price point for entry closer to buying good used gear. Just keep in mind the Z6/7 normally is sold with an additional discount on the kit lens and FTZ - both very important items for a new user. If you can't get the discounts on those items, it's effectively more expensive. If it's a second camera and you have an FTZ and Z lenses, it's probably an effective way to buy at the lowest price.

B&H is reliable - as are other top refurb dealers.

I might consider an extended warranty on a refurb. It's probably okay with just a 90 day warranty, but having a full year warranty would be nice.

I recently picked up a Z6 body only refurb from B&H, it was in fantastic condition and believe it or not the shutter count was zero. It was in the usual white box but included everything you'd get with a new one except the manuals, no worries as I prefer downloading the PDF manual anyway. I've had quite a few refurbished items and only one issue, a D810 arrived with a faulty on/off switch, it was quickly repaired by Nikon and worked flawlessly for years.

Just picked up the Z6 with the 24-70/4 this week. Had 2 clicks on the shutter. Works perfectly and looks absolutely new. A couple of years ago I had picked up a refurb D750 from B&H as well. If I remember right it came with about 1800 clicks, but you couldn't tell it from new either. Eventually sold the D750 to a friend, who last I knew had over 90k clicks on it.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy a refurb body. I like to purchase new lenses for the 5 year warranty though.

Have you EVER had a lens go bad within the 5 year window?

I considered B&H's refurb but I also wanted the FTZ and needed an XQD card. Once I factored those into the price of the refurb, the difference wasn't great enough compared to their new "package" deal.

As long as it's a reputable seller and a manufacturer refurb. Beware seller refurbs off eBay. (or at least understand that it's not the same at all - I've never bought a seller refurb camera, but have bought very bad seller refurbs from eBay that have had to go back)

You are the first person who I recall ever bringing up a fake refurb. What is a seller refurb? I've never even seen one. Who would you buy one from that isn't a normal dealer (even on ebay), without thinking "Hmmm... what could go wrong?"

I’ve had some that need focus adjustments but none that died. I like sending in some of my heavy use lenses in for cleaning and calibration every couple of years.

It's funny how the words "refurbished" or "recertified" strikes fear and paranoia into some peoples' heads.

I bought a Nikon recertified D7200 a few years back, from a reputable store, as a third body for a wedding. It had everything a brand new camera came with, including packaging, had no marks or nicks, and only about 20'ish clicks on it. I saved a few hundred from buying new for what was "essentially new" and would have no hesitations doing it again. In fact, in some cases I go straight to looking for refurbished equipment now. (Actually, to expand on that, I bought a Nikon recertified D7100 a week before that and ended up returning it and switching to the D7200, but the experience was the same.)

Anyways, the camera sat on my shelf for a couple years untouched so I decided to sell it as I wasn't using it anymore. I think I put an extra 200'ish clicks on it since I bought it, but there was less than 300 in total for sure. The camera was in perfect condition as it sat in my bag for most of the shoot. The manual/software, neckstrap, cables, and even battery were still in their original wrapping since I never needed any of it. My ad had lots of pictures of the camera to show it was in flawless condition. Even included a screenshot of the shutter actuations. I had a buyer lined up for it but he wanted a picture of everything it came with. As soon as he saw the word "Recertified" on the box, he flipped out and accused me of trying to scam him and that he wasn't going to let me rip him off. I explained to him that refurbished/recertified cameras go through the factory QA before they're sold, but he continued to call me a rip off artist all because of the box.

To avoid that situation again, I told the next potential buyer the camera didn't come with a box which he was fine with. When he saw the camera, he had to ask me again if I even used it because everything looked brand new to him. So I guess in a way, I did scam next buyer by being untruthful about the box

So OP, to answer your question: I would seriously reconsider buying a factory refurbished camera because the box is the cause of all human misery. In fact, I'm pretty sure the source of the coronavirus was a reburbished Nikon box.

I appreciate your jab. I was buying a Nook, the generation with the bronze back, and they're actually a bit hard to find other than seller refurbs, I guess they didn't sell well. I bought it because eBay assures buyers. When there was visible glue on the front I boxed it, got a refund and tried again.

Refurbished doesn't mean that the manufacturer did it, that's why the term "manufacturer refurbished" exists. It would be a bit redundant if the term refurbished meant that on its own. Manufacturers don't own the capability to restore something (though many refurbs are really just inspected). Seller refurbished just means that the person who is selling you the item performed the refurbishing. That doesn't mean it's a fake (unless it's presented as a manufacturer refurb)
