OK, I've been using the Canon 50mm macro. It is quite sharp, but sloooow to focus at times. I also have the 100mm, which snaps right to for focus. Alas, the working distances i use sometimes require the 50 and not the 100.

Does the group know of an acceptable 50mm macro, full frame, that focuses faster than the Canon?

Sheesh, I have the EF 50 2.5 and just as long as it's dialed into the marco range, AF is plenty peppy (prefocus using MF if you've been shooting at infinity). I used to own the Simga 50 2.8 macro and it was seemed even slower to me and didn't lock nearly as reliably.

The EF-s 60/2.8 macro has a proper motor. The other ones in the range, no. There's only two of them, anyway (Canon and Sigma). There are longer Sigmas (70mm) but the old one also has a slow buzzer for AF and the new one is an unknown value, never seen any reports on it.

Maybe a crop body and the 35 macro are the way to go if you need a 50ish equivalent for closeups. Canon probably thought no one really needs a "serious" short macro so the 50CM was never updated, and when they decided to have something they shifted the niche down into the EF-s range.

You may want to look into regular (but close focusing) 50s and add extension tubes depending on how much magnification is needed. The Tamron 45/1.8 that I have focuses very close, down to 1:3 at the very least.

Edit for typo.

I use the EF-S 35 2.8 IS STM on my 90D as a flower and document copy lens and it's fast focusing (for macro), sharp and the IS feature is great. Very reasonably priced if you buy the CanonDirect refurb during a coupon sale.

The Sigma 70mm Art macro extends like the previous version, and it is focus by wire.

Unlike the older version, it will auto focus and lock. However, it is not fast like the Canon 100mm. If the focus is close, it usually locks in reasonably quickly but it can also cycle the lens in and out to try again. It is much queter than the older version.

As I understand it, extending macro lenses retain their original focal length unlike internal focus designs like the Canon 100mm macro lenses.

Either 70mm Sigma macro is very lightweight.

Not many choices near 50mm with auto focus.

The Sigma EX DG 50mm isn't USM motor focus, but it is 1:1 without a tube or converter.

The Zeiss isn't auto focus or 1:1.

The Canon life size converter does work with other EF lenses. I don't know how close to 1:1 you get using it on a different 50mm lens.

EFs 60mm macro will work on a full-frame camera if you use an extension tube. That will also allow shorter MFD. The life-size converter might be a nice addition. Try KEH for that.

That's nice to hear. Does it cover all of the frame at all distances? Does it work if you just "mod" it by ripping out the protruding rear baffle and place it on the camera bare? (I did that with the only EF-S lens in the household, the 18-135 STM, and it works decently in the upper quarter of the range, but that's only for an emergency).

Just figured to mention:

The Canon 1.4x TC is NOT compatible with the Sigma 70mm macro. The protruding end will not fit. At least without damage .

A Sigma TC must be used with the Sigma 70mm Art macro (the EX DG version).

Not sure if any other off brand will work (i.e.: Kenko).

Also unsure if the much newer Sigma TC for the 100-600 Global Vision lenses will work with the 70mm macro.

I have used the 60mm only as a macro and only stopped down. I’m sure that you will lose infinity focus. There is some vignetting but that is easy to fix.

Tamron 45mm? Think it’s 1:2, not 1:1.

Just under 1:3. Not really a macro lens, just close focusing.

There's Sigma 50/2.8 EX DG, cheap, sharp, I don't think it's appreciably faster than the 50/2.5, but goes to 1:1.
