someone on the forum said, when you get a new lens use only it for three weeks. i think this sound advice. (the 50 1.4 is probably the last lens i would ever sell). for the past month i've used a recently acquired 85 1.2 for almost everything, and it pays off. all these comments great advice.

How do you find 85mm 1.2L vs 85mm1.8? DOF difference must be dramatic but is it really worth 4 times the price?
Just trying to save money here....if you know what I mean

I agree with the other posters. This is really a great lens. The DOF needs to be watched though as I fell into this very trap when I first used the lens at f1.4. Once you realize what is going on it becomes easy to handle.

Greg.

Me Too. I was not completely satisfied at first.

Then i checked the dof on a hunch...

ant at best your talking mere MM of dof. not a whole lot of room for error.

that being known, Now i am extremely pleased and could not be happier.

If DOF is so tiny, I was once told that I could switch to camera to continuous shooting. Shoot 2 to 3 frames for each pic and there will be a higher chance of getting one right.

it's hard to give a straight answer on the 85 1.2 vs the 85 1.8 cause owners of the first always want to justify the money! that said, the 85 range is what i use the most, for dance, theater, indoor sports, and portraits. (i still would not trade off the 50 1.4). the 1.8 got me lots of good stuff, does well in post-processing, is lighter and cheaper. but the 1.2 adds something (besides weight!). like everybody i have a hard time describing it but you know it when you see it. color? contrast? the portraits can be monumental and piercing (though one fm'r said you either hit a home run or strike out with this lens). the slow-focusing i personally find a non-issue. on the 20D split the focus and exposure and use ia servo and continuous shooting. you'll get what you want. all this takes practice (i think all the primes the same, to get the most out of them, tho this one maybe the most difficult). it really feel like a serious lens (no other feels like it). i could have kept the 1.8 but figured what's the point of taking pictures unless you have a chance at the best? frankly, i'd say try it, especially if you can rent it. however, you may not get good results at first. you can shoot everything with it. look at the last cdt galleries at
www.pbase.com/wwp these are shot with this lens. in my brief experience the primes will outshoot the zooms everytime, but i enjoy the zooms too.
