Ai-servo is not meant for static objects.
one shot, the camera actually AF twice ( we don't see this) for accuracy.
the expanded point is in case there is not much contrast to work with in the main box, the system will incorporate a wider AF area by including the expanded spots.
You said you have issues.... you need to explain the shooting environment/settings.
Some shooters think single point AF works all the time. It will do pretty well except when it gets dark.
and dark is by the cameras standards ... not ours.
For example, at a wedding reception, i switch over to expanded spot AF. I even have the focus assist on form the flash on camera.
The single point af will struggle.
