p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Why no 1DxIII "reviews" from Sports photographers?

I've watched numerous videos and read several written reviews on this body. Most have been wedding or portrait photogs or based more on the video side of things. I've seen one shooting cars and one shooting surfing above and below water (which was the most applicable to me).

However, what I have not seen is anything for a sports shooter. No one shooting football or basketball at high ISOs in poor lighting. Canon has a sample shot in one of their videos of swimming at 51200, but it's not up on their site where you can really look over it.

Is this because the camera is not technically "released", meaning the reviewers are basing their review on the a pre-production model? Is there that much that can change between "in the hands" pre-production and actual production? Where are the sports users thoughts?

You will have a hard time finding full time sports photographers that also have enough YT or website following to be interesting for Canon to invite to an event or provide a sample for public reviewing.

They surely conduct beta testing with large number of sports photographers (majority of them being from big agencies, since they quoted the "need for smaller files and fast delivery" and of course being out of reach of many non-pros with the ridiculous pricing), but I'm thinking they aim for more exposure from on screen talent/reviewers rather than pro shooters since 1DIII/Galbraith fiasco. Pro shooters will gladly just accept whatever the latest body offers, unless it's broken like the mentioned camera was.

B&H did a review using hockey, and there were also motorsports reviews posted by a couple testers, one of those Gord.

I'd bet you that Peter Read Miller has shot it in pre-production. But I don't get the impression that he's one to do a review like most do.

I usually watch more sports than photography on YouTube, and yeah it's a bit fishy, but I'm wondering how many sports photographers actually have a promo thing on YouTube? I guess people like the Northrups and Fro are popular, but idk if they do much sports.

The correct answer is trivial. They all switched to Sony & Nikon. Seriously though it is the NDA till Canon starts shipping.

There’s plenty of reviews, mostly videos, with sample images. I’m just not seeing anything from a Sports photog. Seems strange that a camera designed for sports is being reviewed by wedding and portrait photos and the sports guys are silent.

Again BH review had their person shoot a hockey game with plenty of examples of the tracking.

That might be, but Bipock is probably interested in opinion of somebody who actually uses a camera like that in his/her daily tasks. The B&H guy is... a B&H guy, not a professional sportsphotographer or photojournalist.

Here's an idea.
Put a list together of 5 or so Pro sport photog's that you trust/respect and are aware that they have had their hands on the pre-production units. Then send this list of names to Tony and/or Fro or any other You-tuber to then ask them to do interviews with any of them that are willing to play.

As mentioned earlier, these working Pro's probably don't give a rats-ass about making IG or Youtube reviews or writing blogs. But perhaps they would be interested in doing interviews with those that do.
Not sure what the details of the NDA's are, so that might present a problem.

I suspect this type of info will be trickling out shortly anyhow though. It's only been what a day or two since the white papers were released?
Anyone that is seriously interested in this flagship has already placed their pre-orders. For those that are waiting for some user feedback before they jump, you got a little over a month before the ship date hits. By that time there will be plenty of hands-on info out there.

Well, Peter Read Miller has a you-tube channel, and seems to do the occasional camera review. Here is his review of the EOS R, as an example.

Edited to remove a mistake.

Gordon Laing’s Cameralabs has already posted a you-tube review, in which he was using the 1D X III for motorsport subjects. He clearly demonstrates the AF-On button’s usability as a means to move the AF point by touch. Yes, face-detect AF seems to be working, even with faces obscured by visors and helmets. He will post a review, soon, on the HEIFs.

I have not yet looked at his site for written review, or still images.

If I am not mistaken, Gordon’s background is sports photography.

Because sports shooters are not reviewers and reviewers are not sports shooters.

I'd say give it a bit of time. Maybe some guys will have it for the NFL playoffs and Super Bowl.

I had a quick look at the camera today in an indoor office environment but didn't take home any images, so can't really comment much on that aspect of the camera, other than what I saw on the rear display.

But the AF point toggle thumb button thingie is BRILLIANT. Finally there's a way to BBF and move the focus point around easily, but not accidentally. I also tried it with black gloves and it worked just as well. Hopefully this becomes a new standard interface feature across a wide range of Canon's cameras.

Everything felt really fast, responsive and tight. From reviewing images on the rear display, I didn't get any 'bad feelings' about its AF capabilities when shooting through the viewfinder. AF in live view was very sticky holding onto a subject as the composition changed while shooting at 20fps with the mechanical shutter. There was very, very slight stutter between frames (likely the shutter induced blackout) but so much better than the previous 1DX models. At the end of such a sequence when lifting off the shutter release, there was a slightly longer delay, maybe 1/4 second, before live view was fluid again.

I know, it's not much to go on. It'll really be a matter of getting a camera for a week or two to get a proper feel for it, but first impressions were extremely good.

It irks me because they gear this camera towards sports photographers and the only real challenge shooting wise i saw was the guy shooting the surfers. If you want to impress those of us that shoot sports full time shoot it at a high school, small colleges. Anything that shows you the iso is better and the tracking is better. The guy shooting hockey for b&h was painful to watch, most of his stuff was underexposed and then shooting with a 100-400 lens on top of that.

That was my thoughts too - although I really liked the surfing work. There's swimming samples at ISO 51200 in the release video, but I cannot find anywhere they show more or the photographer discussing.

I agree on the B&H video too. That's why I dismissed it.

Still showed what the camera can do regardless of exposure settings, and there are more videos every day it seems. Obviously the camera is better than the 1DX2 and we know it can do sports, so this will just be better.

Peter Read Miller will be using a 1DX3 to shoot an NFL game this weekend, according to a you-tube video that he just posted.

He hasn't shot with it yet. He is shooting NFL this weekend and says he will do a second video after he shoots it.
