Jump to 52:40 and he used live view. Appears to be no blackout, at least from that clip. I believe he was in silent too, no jello in the movement either. I will test it out for you, holding a foot away
Thanks for sharing that Rob. Yes he was in Silent as you can see the E-shutter indicator in lower left.
I still can't tell from that clip. For that limited amount of panning that is what I see in my Slideshow Z50 and Z7. It is not until I try to pan with a duck IF that I realize that the slideshow image is behind reality and my panning lags behind. But I will say that if the Auto or Large Zone modes work reliably and you aren't relying on one of the expansion modes where you have to keep the AF point on the subject then even a slideshow effect can be overcome. When I have a really clean and distant background I am able to track in slideshow mode a duck IF with the Z50/Z7 in Auto AF. But Auto AF on Z cameras isn't anywhere near as good as Nikon DSLR Auto AF or Sony Wide/Zone so I can't rely on them if anything else comes into frame (say like a closer tree or a berm or island etc) as the Auto AF will often just jump to that and off of the bird.
The other thing to consider is if 1/60 sensor read is fast enough to avoid distortions in typical BIF. I think it will be because I shoot my Z cameras in e-shutter for ducks IF and haven't noticed anything weird. The Z cameras have much slower than 1/60th read. You just won't be able to shoot hummers. Heck even the A9 sometimes distorts hummers at 1/160 read but most of the time it is okay.
That all said, the basketball sequence out of the Atmos looks great for that scenario. Also I have a few shooting locations where I could setup on tripod/gimbal and use a 1DXIII rear screen in e-shutter so it wouldn't rule out that feature entirely for me. Just wish they could have put in a tough one direction flip screen like the one on D850 to make low angle shooting via LV a thing. I understand not putting on their traditional flip to the side screen as that is just too risky to break.
