Partially, I think expectations are also higher now purely from a technical perspective. I notice this pretty often when going back and looking at old sports photography. Composition is mostly unchanged, but a surprisingly large number of professionally published shots are noticeably out of focus or have unintentional motion blur. It doesn't really change all that much at the end of the day, but the difference can be striking if you're looking for it.

Yup. I recall trying to manual focus BIF back then and my hit rate was 0. Now, with my E-M1 II with the latest firmware, my success rate is around 30%.

Nature photography seems to have gone way up in quality as well. I wasn't around back in the days as far as photo goes but looking at older nature photos and videos and comparing them with todays, like Planet Earth and Our Planet (to name a few) the technology seem to have helped tons in getting the photos and video compared to even 20-30 years ago. Now I understand these series are also extremely well though through with thousands of hours in uncomfortable places for camera men (amongst others) but still.

Yes, digital cameras and lenses are extremely sophisticated today. But a lot of the high level of image quality is a direct result of the incredible editing software that is available today.

And I would bet that 90% (or more) of the great wildlife video footage you see in those documentaries is manually focused...

Who the hell cares whether video or still shots were manually focused or auto focused? Certainly not the viewers, unless they are focus-peepers.

They might care, if all the footage was out of focus... unfortunately many photographers think this means newer and fancier cameras are required, but really all that is needed is skill and perserverence.

If I start watching a video that is out of focus, I stop watching it. I never say to myself, gee I wonder if that person shot it in manual or auto-focus.

Don't worry about it, Tony... this conversation seems to be a bit over your head.

So since the E-M1 Mk III was successfully locked to due stupidity, let's try and keep this thread non idiotic and actually post and discuss things about the camera instead.

Part 2 of Petr Bambousek's review.

I am just thrilled that we have so many great mirrorless options today ... which makes making a decision that much harder!

The Canon 100-500 lens looks like it's only the size of their 100-400 DSLR version:

It does look like the 100-500 will be a little larger and heavier than the 100-400.

Any guesstimates on how these compares with m43? Like Olympus 300mm or Panasonic 100-400m?

@Sagar, the 100-400 EF II USM lens above is 1570g (3,46lbs) without the tripod collar. 94x193mm in size (3,66x7,6 inches)

The 100-500 looks a bit beefier and longer, if the glass and build quality is the same I would expect some more weight. Unless they have pulled off some nice material change and glass change that is to more exotic glass and lighter materials.

The Oly 300mm F4 is 1270g with the tripod collar (2,8lbs) and and 8,93 inches long and the same width.

The Canons are also shorter in focal length but with the added benefit of being zooms of course. Judging from other Canon glass price I expect the 100-500 to be quite a bit more expensive (the 100-400 is about the same price as the Oly 300F4). But we'll see

The shorter length can be made up by higher resolution sensor of course and the slower lenses are easily made up for by a sensor that is at least two stops better in ISO so it's hard to say which would be the better choice.

/Rasmus

Here you go ... E-M1 III + 300 vs EOS R and EOS RP + 100-400L with adaptor. The new 100-500 R lens is probably about the same length as the older 100-400 EF lens + EF-R adaptor. The EOS RP is a compact entry-level camera with a FF 26MP sensor and currently selling for only $999.

It's 1,270g (tripod collar not included) / 1,475g (tripod collar included)

My bad, thanks for correcting me

So pretty much the same weight and size, give or take some.
