I am just thrilled that we have so many great mirrorless options today ... which makes making a decision that much harder!

The Canon 100-500 lens looks like it's only the size of their 100-400 DSLR version:

The pricing of the R-system lenses though... so far at least. On the other hand many of them are very special and fast. With the released specs so far it looks to be expensive, as it should be. My guess is around 4k judging on the 2k pricing of the current R? As seemingly all other mirrorless systems have caught up to Olympus in terms of their pricing, m43 again looks "cheap" in comparison

It seems to me that Canon is now taking aim at those people that use a long lens (wildlife photographers etc...) and that also do not want to carry around a huge lens. Now that everyone is gravitating to smart phone photography, what is left are professionals and enthusiasts and these 2 groups will spend cash on gear. Wildlife photographers have to be one target group now whereas in the past not so much. It will be interesting to see what Canon comes up with. Good news for many of us on this forum.

Portability is the name of the game. I am amazed that the weight of the Canon 600/4 lens dropped from a whopping 11.8 lbs (original version) to 8.26 lb (Mk II) to 6.71 lbs for the Mk III - which is the same weight as the Sony 600/4 GM lens ... and we are not talking about a DO lens. A 600mm f5.6 DO lens could possibly weigh around 4 lbs.

A quick blog post and test from a Swedish camera store. A few photos of birds in flight.

Off topic for this thread, but it would not be a first. Olympus just released a firmware update for the EM1x. I followed the link with bated breath...could this be the expanded AF subject recognition that Olympus promised! Perhaps additional tweaks to the AF?

As it turns out the Firmware offers me the ability to use focus stacking with the 12-45mm f4 (a lens that I have little interest in) and now I have more options on how the viewfinder is displayed.

It looks like the promised 150-400 lens and any advancements in the EM1x AF are in the same place. The problem is that only Olympus knows where that is. I am very disappointed.

Tony - what do you think of this Canon R5? Approx 40MB FF camera with a "high-performance coordinated image stabilization", 20 fps continuous shooting in e-mode and 12 fps in mechanical mode. Body looks like a compact version of the 5D III. Their 100-500/4.5-7.1 lens is an L-series lens about the size of their 100-400L DSLR lens, and it will accept both TCs. They’ve got my attention!

Would you be shocked if the 150-400 never gets released?

I did say I'd like to see it. I'm guessing it wasn't shot from 800m away as atmospheric turbulance, humidity and dust always soften those shots.

If you're an Audubon Society member, you've probably seen the image several times. This image has generated several thousand dollars in licensing fees over the past 5 years or so.

It was taken with an EOS 50D, EF 500mm f4L IS, and 2x teleconverter, resulting in an effective FL of 1600mm on the cropped sensor; the way the image was heavily cropped for this use, the resulting equivalent FL is about 2500mm. The little guy was running through the grass (surprisingly quickly) responding to his parents' calls, and he was moving too fast to focus manually so I switched to LV and let the camera track him - which it did relatively well. Good enough for a two-page spread...

Maybe not, the way things are going lately with the camera industry and with Olympus.

100%

It's not helpful that they haven't given any information on it in a long time. I suppose if they sell a good amount of both Mark III's we could see it this year. If not, I think it might "run into production issues". Fingers crossed that's not the case.

If I remember correctly the 300mm was also delayed.

If I remember correctly they went from a non-IS lens in the initial mockup to an IS lens. I am Glad they went back and made that change.

Here is the first mockup of the 300mm from Feb 2014. You'll notice the press release from Olympus says that it will be release with the 7-14 f2.8 in 2015. it ended up getting announced 2 years later. Hopefully the 150-400 doesn't take that long.

Really....!!!....Crap!

At least the 150-400mm mock up has been done quite a bit ago.

Tony who? This Tony could care less what Canon is doing. I shoot with Olympus gear.

The CP+ show was just cancelled so we may not find out more on the 150-400 for a while now.

Sorry, the Tony I was referring to hops from one brand to another and I wanted his take on the new Canon R5. Obviously I am addressing the wrong Tony!

And just to show that Olympus is not alone. Canon announced the lens development of their 200-400 + TC in Feb 2011 and while it was seen at the summer 2012 Olympics it was not officially released until May 2013.

Very nice shot, made even more impressive by the fact that there is no C-AF, or rather AI Servo, mode in liveview for the 50D.

We're so spoiled by technology now - it's a wonder that we were ever able to capture images in the "old" days of a decade ago...
