p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Canon 80D shutter count

So I'm striking out. Can't find a definitive answer on the interwebs. I haven't been here for a while but I figured the Fred Miranda people might know.

I bought a used Canon 80D. Went to get a shutter count. Got a nasty utility off the web that dumps the raw exif data. 308 data values. Shutter count from this camera is no longer among them. All the web and software utilities do the same thing. They just grep 'shutter count' in the exif data.

I've read that the latest generation of Canon processors in pretty much all their cameras don't include that bit of information in that file. Does anybody know if there's another way to get at that?

Not that big a deal, but now it's a quest.

The ShutterCount app work perfectly on my 80D: simply displays the shutter count without extra BS. Bought it at the AppleStore a few years back for $2.99. There's a "pro" version too (don't know makes it pro...).

Yeah, I found that after I posted. Mac only. Don't have a Mac anymore. They can't be the only ones who have figured this out. 2.99 seams damned reasonable.

Eosmsg seems to be what you are searching for.

Thanks folks. I went through the list linked above and found three apps that claimed to pull the shutter count from Digic 6 and later processors.

One was for Linux only and the home page included instructions for identifying and killing runaway processes. Makes me believe that's pretty buggy software. I'm an old Unix guy. I did a kill -9 on the idea of putting that on a computer connected to my network.

Eosmsg is the only one built for Windows. It's from a Chinese company with a sketchy website that screams malware wrapper. I'm probably wrong about all of that, but still, I passed.

Dug up an old IPad I had laying around and installed the ShutterCount app. Took me more than an hour, but I finally got the tablet and the app store and PayPal and the software and the camera all talking to each other. For $5 I got the shutter count. For another $4 I can get live view stats. Went bare bones, but hey, it delivered as promised.

Once again the folks on FM forums come through. Salud.

Cool, I didn't know ShutterCount ran on iPad too.

This link worked for me on a 5D3 I just bought. Worked like a charm.

I don't know if it was the same app or not but I know of several folks that used shutter count apps to get the count and then sent the camera in to Canon for one reason or another. They asked for a shutter count to be included in the service. It was different in all examples then the app provided. So how accurate are the apps? I don't know since I don't care for myself about it.

eosmsg does in fact work for the 80D (and 5Ds for that matter which is another camera that's hard to find a count app for).

I bought an 80D as a refurb last summer, and checked it soon after receiving it when I had kept track of my shots still on the first card I put in it.

The camera looked absolutely brand new, and I had 138 shots on the card, and eosmsg reported 138 shots. It had 3847 this morning when I checked it.

This may be a bit of an old topic, but it was quite present-day to me, as I recently required a used 80D. Everywhere people told about the same tools, which either should be bought on a per camera base (EOSMsg) or only works on Apple. However, recently I came across a different tool, which is completely free. It's called Tornado SCF and can be used for many Canon and also Nikon models. See https://tornadosw.com/tornado-scf.php

I can confirm that this software is free and works to find shutter count on my Canon 80D.

The only downside I heard being reported (and which is openly advertised on their website) is that the software gets falsely identified as being virus infected. I can confirm it is clean though!
