I've never shot the 35, but I have the 21 and I'm very happy with the Tamron from a landscape shooting perspective.

Any comparisons with this lens against the Loxia 35?
i just picked up a used copy of the loxia. its not on the level of the 21 or 50 i own so it might go back. its not horrible but not what i expected.

Fred, what is your solution for the 35mm FL right now? Is it a single lens do all type, or do you have one for example that you use for landscapes? Is it a prime or zoom?

I can say that from a LoCA perspective, I'd put the lenses in this order (based on decreasing LoCA.)

1. Tamron
2. Sony
3. Samyang

In some shots I find the Sony doing better, in others the Samyang.

It would be great to have a mid-distance rendering comparison between Tamron 35/2.8, Sony 35/2.8 and Samyang 35/2.8.
We already have an idea of how the Sony and Samyang render and comparing them side by side to the new Tamron would be very useful.
Personally I don't own any of these lenses but if the Tamron's rendering is pleasant, it would be a consideration to me. The Sigma 45/2.8 has the most pleasant rendering for my taste but it's not 35mm.

I have a few different views to share, my posts may be spread out over the next 2 days or so.

All shot on the Sony a7R III and processed in Lightroom, all corrections I could turn off were off. Minimal adjustments for color and exposure. Sharpening was set to 45 for all. No other adjustments.

Focus was on the post to the right of the post with a finial on the top.

No these aren't going to have the bokeh of the Sigma 35mm 1.2 for Sony, remember these are f/2.8 lenses.

It is highly recommended you download the full size files.

Look at the lower right corner on the Tamron..really great performance @ wide open. I realize faster lenses will probably show the same, but impressive for a lens that is wide open.

Hesitate to post this one, but it's a bokeh comparison, it seems like the Sony and Samyang slightly missed on AF. It was cold and windy when I did this, and I did rely on AF to speed things up. If anything kudos to the Tamron for nailing AF.

Focus was (intended) to be on the post in the center for the frame.

See if tagging works.... Let me know what you think @grahamgibson and @Fred Miranda .

Fred, what are you using at 35mm today? The Loxia 35 for landscape shooting?

Thank you, the tags didn't work, but I was checking back in.

Looks pretty similar to me, but I'd give a slight edge to the Tamron in the bokeh department based on these comparisons at least. The Samyang and Sony almost look like the same lens, they're so close. I'm seeing more of the light rings around the edges of bokeh on these two, whereas the Tamron is smooth. I'm mainly looking at the areas surrounding the post in the 2nd set of images. The Sony/Samyang show more of the "double lines" among trees as well, and maybe a bit more color fringing.

Nice comparison, I'd say the Tamron looks great.

I agree, the Samyang to me definitely has more defined bokeh edges, and almost give the background a painted look in some of the shots (in certain areas.) The Sony does look similar, but I think the effect is slightly muted.

I like the Tamron's bokeh best out of the three here.

Here's a shot at f/4 from the Tamron, I think the bokeh is pleasing and I think that's a little unusual for a lens as sharp as it is.

I agree with most of what you wrote. The ZA and Samyang are not that different while the Tamron has the smoothest transition zone and less CA. However, the Tamron corners look sharper + contrasty and I find that distracting. (Similar to what I see with the Sony FE 35/1.8). I always found the ZA's rendering off-axis distracting and unfortunately the Tamron does even worse in this area.
However, around the middle of the frame, the Tamron renders smoother with less outlining and less double-lining compared to the other two.

I'm still waiting for a 35mm lens that renders like the Sonnar 35/2. Sony accomplished this with their 24/1.4 GM, so I'm sure it's possible to design a 35mm lens with similar signature.

Here is a crop showing the ZA versus Tamron towards the corners. (This happens in all comparisons Tim posted)

I would love to see a landscape aperture comparison between the Tamron and the Loxia 35. But I'm not willing to fork over the dough to make that happen.

The Loxia 35 will only compare well with the Tamron after f/5.6 when its wavy field curvature is masked by DOF.
I've compared the Loxia 35 to the FE 35/1.8 and they performed very close at f/6.3 and smaller apertures. At wider apertures, the Sony had a noticeable better mid-field (Especially from f/2 to f/4).
The Tamron seems to be more even across the frame with less CA, especially at wider apertures.

My current 35mm landscape lens is the CV 40/1.2. Waiting for a new Loxia 35 or CV 35 to complement my Loxia 21.

This is my landscape 35, and nothing really interests me in terms of the competition that's out there right now. I would definitely take a look at both a CV 35 and a new Loxia 35 if either were to drop.

Nice comparisons. I've been more interested in trying out the Tamron's closeup capabilities, but I have both it and the 24GM. If i can find the time, perhaps I will compare the Tamron at 2.8 to the GM in crop mode at 2.0.

I saw this DPR comparison video against the Sony:

Main knock on the Tamron is slower AF and worse coatings, but otherwise IQ is better and it offers macro at a very compelling price (although the Sony can be found for <$400 used now). Their bokeh test was pretty basic and didn't show a huge difference, more of a slight edge to the Tamron.

I haven't compared the FE 35/2.8 ZA to the Tamron from a flare perspective, but the Tamron has a lot of contrast, so the difference in that video may be as much the particular lens design vs purely just coatings. I realize the Sony has Zeiss T*, so not saying it isn't great. More that I haven't found the Tamron to be bad.

Is the Tamron AF slower than the Sony 35/2.8 ZA?

It is slower than the 35/2.8 ZA Fred. The video below can give you some idea how AF performs. If you fast forward to 3:26 or so, you can see it for yourself. I just realized that he's showing the 24, not the 35, but it seems close to what I see. Oddly he shows AF performance adapted to a Nikon and it looks better than on Sony. I guess that leaves some hope for an improvement via a firmware update, but it doesn't seem as though it would ever be fast.

I know that's probably a deal breaker for some.

It's a shame this lens has caveats that scare people away.

MF experience will turn off some landscape shooters.
Size will turn off some of the small lens shooters.
AF will turn off some of the all arounder lens shooters.
Speed will turn off the fast lens shooters.

But it's a winner in my book, warts and all.

Here are a couple of test shots, the first is the Tamron and the second is the GM 24. Both processed in Lightroom and sharpened in Topaz Sharpen AI.

Sharp and contrasty. At least the average Joe has another cheap native option along with the Samyang/Rokinon. The image quality and price makes it a good value for the cash conscious.

Does this now count as a sample images thread for this lens? I bought it for my Instagram food shoots and have been choosing it over the Sigma 35mm 1.2 due to its lower distortion and field curvature, harmonic sharpness across the image, maximum magnification, relative lack of aberrations, and size and weight. Here are my first samples (some already posted on the Sony FE images thread) and more to come. The tall images in the second half were cropped specifically for IG stories (16:9):
