p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · 2nd body question

Hey guys! I just swapped from Nikon, I picked up an A7RIV at a really good deal and shot a competition with it this weekend. I was really happy with the performance, I know they say its not a "sports" camera but it seemed to work really well for me.

Now I am on the question of the 2nd body. I shoot mostly sports, do I buy an A9 or A9ii as my next body or pick up an A7iii for a way cheaper cost?

I can use the A7RIV with a shorter lens or just keep using the 85mm and crop mode if I need more rang and put the 70-200 on the A7iii. I am just not sure how well it focuses compared to the RIV or A9 or A9ii. I am far from rich so saving money would help haha

Current lens setup is a 24-70 g master, 85mm zeiss batis 1.8 and a 70-200 f2.8 g master.

I need 2 bodys typically for sports shooting, but im not sure if I really need to get an A9 since the A7IV performed pretty well.

Here are a few shots from this weekend.

If somehow feasible, using two of the same camera bodies is definitely the way to go. Setup the same way, the two bodies will work seamlessly in tandem. No difference in feel and operation; you don't have to think twice on how to do certain aspects; just different lenses for different coverage.

Great images, BTW!

You know - you might just be one of those shooters who has skilz

The A9 is *the* follow focus speed demon king. The chatter is that the original A9 is fine, especially with all the firmware upgrades it was given this year, which one pro state: "was like getting a new camera"

Where the A9 difference is going to be is in focus tracking at a high frame rate - and some of those in-between captures may be your make it or break it.

That said, great shooters with skilz for years have been capturing great moments without the need for 20fps. Do a try out session with it if you can to see if it's right for you.

I get what AGeoJO is saying about consistency of models - but it's also possible for a photographer to shoot two different models and do just fine. I do - I shoot not only with different models but also different brands - no problem.

That does make sense. So maybe pick up another A7RIV might be the key.

Thanks!

I also think I would like to give the A9 a run to see. Most of the comps I shoot at have a strict "no video" policy as that is for the media channel only. So the 20 fps might be the key to compile all those frames into premire pro and make a stop motion video to.

Hmmmmm

Since you mostly do sports, I would highly recommend you try at least a used A9 before comitting to buying another A7R4.
I love my R3 and had the R4 loaner but the A9 AF is just insane and spoils you. When a 36MP A9 comes out..I will drop my R3

The A9 II would feel closer to the A7r IV. The A9 feels similar to the A7r IV but less so. For whatever reasons, Sony reversed the position of the SD slots from the A9/A7r III to the A9 II/A7r III. Since I used both the A7r IV and A9 and I wasn't thinking when I retrieved the SD card from what I thought was Slot 1 and I couldn't see any files. As it turned out I pulled the wrong SD card out. Again, no big deal but just a little annoying and fortunately, you wouldn't experience that while shooting, at least, I didn't.

I would suggest for you to get the A9 II since both are closer in many aspects to the A7r IV than the A9 classic.

I much prefer A9 for fast moving, erratic movement vs the iv...but I just got the iv. Crop mode is a plus for the iv.

The A9 should have better high ISO performance than the R4 if shooting under low light conditions is a consideration.(Meaning ISO 6400 and up) Also, its electronic shutter is not as susceptible to banding as others. And, as you mentioned, it does give you 20 fps, silently.

You could also rent A9 or A9II with an option to buy from Lens Rentals. Way easier/faster to return a rental than to resell a used body.

If your budget allows, I would suggest going for the A9II. I have both the A7RIV and A9II.

Best of both worlds IMO. Should cover all your photographic needs.

I agree with Joshua. Having two bodies with the same form factor would be ideal.

I also have an A9 that I eventually plan to sell. I used to think the A9 with Sony grip extender felt fine in the hand. But ever since I put grip extensions on my A7RIV/A9II, every time I pick up the A9 now, it just feels weird now.

I guess I’ve gotten used to the new bodies. 😀

I would also recommend against the A7III. It’s a fine camera. Punches way above it’s weight. But the lower resolution EVF and LCD make using it not very enjoyable. Just my opinion of course.

Noticed you like the Batis 85 1.8. Keep in mind your Batis will not shoot 20FPS. The Sony 85 1.8 will. I shoot alot of basketball and the 85 1.8 and 135 1.8 are killer indoors and will both do 20FPS. Same with the 50 1.4.

If you like the a7riv results, I’d just rent the a9ii and evaluate it that way. The cost of the a9ii could be put towards some great glass...

I shoot sports and bought the A9ii and then the A7Riv for a second body. I spent about 15 minutes shooting basketball with the latter and decided I needed to get another A9ii instead, the A7Riv is a fine camera but the viewfinder blackout and "skittish" behavior is just too annoying when panning to track players.

It seemed to track nicely, but not acquire focus as quickly either (though less sure of that, whether I had equal settings).

You can use the electronic shutter on the A9 and get high frame rate; you must use the mechanical shutter on the A7 or you get severe distortion. (That's more comment than a killer issue since it has less impact, I think, on frame rate on the A7Riv; relevant only if you need silence, e.g. golf, plays, etc).

I also think there's just enough difference in menus and controls on the A9ii and A7Riv that it will be quite nice to have to of the same. Not necessary, but nice.

My second A9ii comes in Thursday.

I don't think the a7iii will measure up as a 2nd body for martial arts or sports in general, if you intend on shooting two cameras at once. It's another riv or an a9/a9ii.
I understand the muscle memory advantages of two identical bodies and the card slot thing throws me too (I have riii, riv, and a9) but you will really enjoy the a9. Personally I like having two different options for any shoot so I can select the tool for the job. With the a9 you get amazing AF tracking and you will use it for those can't miss sequences (which yes you can cut into stop motion). I use it to shoot Muay Thai often.

I would only get the a9ii over the a9 if money is no object. IMO the a9 is SO much camera for its current used pricing. (I mean, I thought it was worth it full price!)

What mode do you use in the A9? Tracking expand spot?

You have said that your budget is not unlimited so personally I'd buy a used A9 (they can be found for bargain prices so long as you don't want it to be in pristine condition) and spend anything left over on lenses or just put it back into the kitty for the inevitable next upgrade !

I love my A9 and don't have too much of an issue swapping between the A9 and an even older (than your R4) R2 once I've got them set up.

I use an A9 + 7R for capturing moving subjects (A9) and slower or static subjects (7R).

I don't care how much resolution the R yeilds, if it's out of focus or focused on the wrong subject, it's unusable.

So, I'd recommend the A9 especially if you're focusing on moving subjects, which it seems you are.
The two are the perfect combination and it's almost impossible to get a better pair of bodies

An used A9 would the best bang for the buck for shooting sports at the moment, it will be clearly superior to an A7III and basically the same as an A9II (at least according to all the reports/comparisons on the matter).

I had an A7III, bought an A9 and the difference in tracking is pretty significant, not to mention the blackout-free, higher resolution EVF. I will now most likely sell my A7III for an A7RIII, which I think is currently the best value of the higher megapixel cameras for landscaping purposes.

For a sport like basketball, tracking flexible spot usually M. For something like Muay Thai I am not tracking a player or over a large area, so yes probably tracking expand spot or zone.

I wonder why the batis won't work.

I guess I can keep the batis or the 24-70 on the A7RIV and use the A9ii on the 70-200
