p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · UPDATED: Added pinky real-estate (A7III)

Coming from the 5D4, this thing feels like a P&S

Love everything about it, except the size.

Don't want to go full battery grip, but my pinky hangs on for dear life while shooting weddings all day.

In searching, the OEM pinky grip thing blocks the battery door (duh!) and is $$$

I purchased this one from Amazon, with intentions of removing the plate-portion (so I can hopefully use my spider plate in conjunction).

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07BC8MZVZ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Any other tips or tricks greatly appreciated!

Greg

RRS bottom plate (I used it for precisely that on an A7R3). Or Smallrig baseplate, assuming you can take the vertical L bracket component off.

I have that one. The only thing I didn't like was this felt pad had some kind of adhesive that oozed. If you look at the 3rd pic you'll see the pad. Ended up just removing. Glue kept getting on the camera.

Yes, it's removable.

The Smallrig baseplate is about twice the height of the RRS baseplate, which is actually handy for this purpose.

Interesting...

I wonder what that pad is for, doesn't look to serve a purpose, so I will probably remove as well just in case.

I think it just makes it pretty. It covers two screws, doesn't seem to protect against chafing because there is no chafing there despite my removing it.

why don't you want to get the vertical grip? If you're shooting weddings it seems like it would be the best option. Two batteries and holding the camera vertically with the grip is so much more comfortable and practical

I use this one that seems to have had a significant increase in the price since I purchased.

https://www.amazon.com/New-Upgrade-2019-Stabil-LSIII/dp/B07TSHQHK1

But I really like it. I have the vertical grip I use sometimes as well. I like the fact that the camera can be fairly small and light or larger depending on your needs.

I used to grip all of my cameras, but like the smaller form factor of the A7III (except for the pinky thing).

I can shoot pretty much all day on one battery, and want to minimize the bulk and weight as much as possible.

I may end up with a grip (but NOT the Sony), but exploring the alternatives first

This is a very cool option. If the one I ordered doesn't work well with my Spider setup, I will order this one

Thanks!

I have a Neewer knock of the OEM one, but with the benefit that it has an Arca plate on the bottom vs the Sony hand screw style.

It’s great and makes a huge difference in the handling.

I have this Neewer one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07TWK8X8K/

It's exactly what I wanted and I'm perfectly satisfied. For me, I don't even need a second battery, and I just charge with USB-C leaving the battery in the camera, so I don't need battery door access.

I've used JB Design Grip and got it for every MLC I got because it offered the pinky real estate with a bit of style and little to no weight, but also, for people who use the Techart LM7 adapter, it meant now the adapter no longer protrude when laying the camera down.

Although for the A7III version, I had to Macgyver a bit and cut a little bit out so that the Techart would clear. The A7II variant has no issue though.

Speaking of which, I got out of the Sony family and unloaded all my Sony cams. Still have my JB grips. If anyone here is interested (1*A7II and 1*A7III), I'm looking to unload them for cheap.

Mine is the exact one that Brett posted about. And I echo his comments - never remove the battery and charge via USB. And I only have an A7ii with the smaller batteries; if you have a 3rd gen body with the Z batteries then the frequency of battery changes/charges is much much less.

Sometimes I use a cheap L bracket and remove the vertical portion. Last I looked, they were 10 bucks on eBay. The full L can be tight for smaller bags.

I use the RRS base plate on my A7iii and it pretty much solved the problem for me. The design allows you to move the battery door to the bottom of the plate, it's easy and works great.
