The Samyang is actually quite a bit better in terms of chromatic aberrations than the Sony 55/1.8. Resolution is quite comparable.

Thank you! I like the sun star in the first picture, and the girl has a lot of pop in the third but I don’t like the flare nor the bokeh there

What I absolutely hate about the Samyang is the plasticy build quality. But hey, you get what you pay for.

Do you have some samples? Dustin abbot also says the rendering is smooth but all I see from the lens is quite a harsh bokeh.

Do you have samples? I love my 85 but I’ve been through several copies because the af was not really working fine and it seems to be due to non as good copies... some reviewers said the lens is sharper than the Sony 50 1.8, but then in a review in Spanish in YouTube comparing them, the Sony was sharper, focusing more accurately and with better bokeh, that’s why I’m scared of buying the Samyang and later being worse 😩

Some samples with my Sony 50 1.8

The sample photos of Dustin are quite convincing I think: https://dustinabbott.net/tag/samyang-af-45mm-review/
One example:
https://dustinabbott.net/wp-content/gallery/samyang-af-45mm-f1-8-review/20-F2-Sharpness.jpg
Despite the complex background, it doesn't look distracting.
But hey, bokeh is subjective in the end. I find the Samyang 45 renders quite smoothly.

I only did a very brief comparison between the Samyang and Sigma:
https://blog.keepcoding.ch/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/sigma45_vs_samyang45_bokeh-1.jpg
Yes the Sigma is better, but not by that much.

I owned two copies of the Sony 50mm f/1.8 FE and a decent copy of the Sony Zeiss 55mm f/1.8 FE. The Samyang 45mm is sharper than the Sony 50mm f/1.8 FE, but the Sony renders OOF areas better simply by having a longer FL. Nothing wrong with the Zeiss 55mm f/1.8 FE, I just think it's somewhat overpriced.

Saying that, I don't view the Samyang 45mm as a 50-58mm replacement, it's more like a long environmental portrait lens which renders nicer than your typical 35-40mm lens, but gives you a bit more leeway than a 50mm lens in tighter spaces. If you want a 50mm'ish lens get a 50mm'ish lens. The strengths of the Sam 45mm is it's size, sharpness and flexibility as an environmental/wide and portrait/general usage lens.

A few samples with the Sam 45mm:

Thank you for your samples, also Zeitlos uploaded some very nice sooc in other post.
I have my sigma 35 which I love and my Samyang 85. But they’re big and heavy, and I want a casual lens when I want to go light. Before I used to have the Sony 28 but it was too wide for me, and now I’m using the Sony 50 that is a bit too tight. The perfect thing should be the Sony 35 1.8 but 1: I don’t want to repeat focal distance even if it’s my most used one and 2: it’s expensive for a 35 1.8 (I paid less for my sigma). That’s why I think the Samyang 45 could be a good candidate...

If that's the case, the Sam 45mm is perfect for you! That extra 5mm wider FOV makes a big difference in general usage. Don't expect OOF areas like a 50mm, but you gain a bit in shooting versatility. You can also pair it with a wider zoom or prime and get something different from your 35/85 portrait combo.

I added the 'flare' in the last sample, I held something up to the lens to create a light leak type effect. I'm not into doing that often, but I did like it there.

Here's another sample from the same day with the same subject same time and aperture, I think the bokeh is super smooth and lovely;

The transitional areas are perfect and the CA at f2 is low, only visible at 100% and easily correctable although I don't bother.

I'd describe the Samyang 45 as an option with a classic nifty fifty look, size and weight but with the benefit of a modern AF system at a reasonable price.

I prefer the Samyang to the Sony 55 which is clinical and the prefer the 45 Samyang to the Sigma 45 2.8 also, which I just didn't like at all, but couldn't tell you why.

Note with that third sample from the first post that has the girl on the scooter moving away from the focal plane on the z axis at f2, the A9 had delivered all 20 frames per second in perfect focus which I find most impressive.

I would describe the focus of this Samyang as more than capable for erratic moving subjects coupled with the latest A7/9 bodies.

Also, I like the hood which is often said to be cheap. It gives and I've hit it a couple of times without breaking it, I think this is because it has some flex to it.
The hood also fits to the Samyang 35 2.8 and does a better job than the original with no vignetting, so I've purchased spare for use with the 35 in strong light.

I just thought of a negative for all Samyang lenses, the lack of ability to update firmware without the separately purchased dock.

Awhile back, Cameta Camera (via Amazon) was selling off some old Lenscoats for the Nikon 55-200mm DX lens for $4 USD. I ended buying two for my Samyang 18mm and 45mm lenses. Both fit perfectly. I also just use step-up adapters as hoods, since sourcing OEM Samyang hoods are a PITA. You can also sew your own. I'd recommend fabric scissors and/or an xacto-knife for cutting. Also I use silicone rubber bands over the focus rings so I can leave them covered, but still have adequate grip. I have all my AF lenses wrapped this way. If you ever buy a used lens from me, you know they've been kept in excellent condition!

It's a bit of an annoyance, but if you plan on buying more than one Samyang lens, it's an investment. Same can be said buying the USB dock for Tamron and Sigma lenses for DSLRs. Also I've been rather impressed at how prolific Samyang is at updating their firmware. Even if their lenses are backwards engineered, they seem to address compatibility issues quickly. The only issue with Samyang is that they don't have proper warranty service, which keeps them from being a real third party alternative. In the US, I believe Elite Brands handles warranties, and at best they just send a new lens or perhaps a discounted replacement if out of warranty.

It's not too far behind from the Sigma at f/2.8, and the Samyang 45mm can still go to f/1.8!

Well, the lens is cheap, that is a big plus, it is sharp that is plus too but the bokeh is terrible and that is the end of it.

It is probably good for street photography. What else? a blog? Pictures of dogs/cats. Some landscapes while on vacation? Basically anything, if you do not care how your pictures will look or you want to show your pictures to someone who does not really care (or understand) about your pictures.
I'd rather buy a used Zeiss sony 55mm. I got used Zeiss 85mm for $600 and I'm sure one can find used 55mm for $450-550.

And yet there are people in this thread who prefer the Samyang 45 to the Zeiss 55. Different strokes for different folks.
