Ask buyer to send lens for a repair and provide you receipt. Then reimburse buyer for repair. Alternative is to refund money, get lens you don't need back, repair it and try to sell it again.

Appreciate all the insight and help here in a very tricky issue! Thanks again and happy holidays. I can update on what happens, if anyone is curious

I am curious. You are a good seller - openly asking a good crew about what's fair and reasonable, considering input.

Thanks for all the insights guys.

If anyone is curious, how this ended -
I am the buyer under question here. I returned the lens and we agreed upon a partial refund (70% back to me.)

And the seller was very patient and understanding all through this.
Kudos to him.

Is it still broken or does it work on his camera?

That seems very generous of you.

Why would you only take 70% back... you're out 30%, and have no lens. Seems kind of expensive to me.

Well, USPS tried to deliver it on a monday, I couldn't collect it and had to wait till the Wednesday.
The lens could have been damaged when USPS was trying to deliver it.

It may look expensive, but missing out on 230$ is something that I can definitely live with
It was very tough to determine what caused the lens to fail like that.

It was partly my fault not to go for Paypal protection when getting the lens.
My rationale behind the 30% let off cost is it would cover repair costs if the seller gets it repaired.

Yeah if you don't insure the package and you've controlled for pretty much every other variable then you might be SOL.

If only every seller could get a buyer as gracious as you every time!
