p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Sony 90mm F.8 not detected on Sony A7 Miii

Recently purchased a Sony 90mm FE F2.8 and tried using it on my A7iii.

But the camera does not recognize the lens. The F number is displayed on the camera as F--

Anyone faced this issue and get a resolution?

I don't own this lens, but my A7RIII would not recognize a rented 70-200/2.8GM the other day - same behaviour as you are describing. After about 5 mount/dismounts with no change, I eventually had to clean the contacts on the lens a couple of times then it worked perfectly the rest of the night.
Check (meaning clean) the contacts on both lens and camera.

Already tried cleaning the contacts. Didn't work

did you check to see if the lens mount or mount screws aren't loose.

the electrical contacts on the mount are connected internally via a ribbon cable. it could have come loose. are you the original owner if the lens?

you can loosen the mount screw and check to see if the ribbon cable has loosen from the connector..

Thanks for the suggestion
I purchased it from a FM member recently. Will see if I can do this.

This occurence is not all that uncommon. It can happen a combination of loose or worn tolerance on body mount or body contacts that are worn or damaged. If you got this from a reputable seller off this forum I am sure it was working properly when it left his/her hands.
How long have you had the body, did you get it new or used, do you have several other lenses that have mounted up and worked properly?
Here is a blurb from Sony website: https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/articles/00018741
and it points to Camera Body more so than lens mount as culprit.
Worth a double look to be sure

Thanks for the reply

I tested it on two other lenses - a16-35 f2.8 (New, 6 months old) and a 35mm f1.8(New, 1 month old). - No issues.
AF works as expected.
Over the weekend I mounted a 70-300 (works perfectly.)

My body is a A7III(New, bought it around when it was released.)

Oh darn, hoped it would come around and work out as that 90 Macro is an impressive lens, I too have one and love it!
Did the F/stop even flicker a reading for you, and I assume as odd as it may be the F-stop is also not reading out in the viewfinder?
I had this happen once on a Canon lens I sold, buyer said it would not work, sent it back, was fine on a half dozen bodies I tried, sold it and never had an issue.
USPS has severely bounced around a few lens boxes I have received, thankfully no functional damage but some terribly mangled up boxes have arrived!!

If you are near a camera store you could perhaps have them mount it up and check also before you send it back if that is convenient and agreed by the seller?

This is what happens
Turn on the camera - Everything is black (cap is open ) -> Image comes up on screen, The F number comes up as F2.8 -> F number changes to F--.
I tried putting it in manual. It shows F--. Basically, there is no way I can control the aperture on the lens.

I read in forums/ sony support that the body may cause issues in the lens. So do not want to cause any more issues by testing it out on any other bodies.

Have you updated the body and lens firmware?

Hard to say for sure, but seems like a software issue, as this is the behavior that some of my third party lenses have had adapted. Can't recall a native lens that I've owned with this issue though.

For what it's worth, I have a copy of this lens, and I've been extremely rough with it (it's my go to when shooting product work), and it still is going strong.

What happens if you try dismounting + remounting the lens while the body is powered on? You can try this without having to fully dismount the lens - simply turn the lens slightly off the mount so that it's electrically disconnected while still mounted to the camera, then turn it the other way to lock it back onto the mount.

The lens has no firmware updates.
Body is on the latest firmware.

Tried this too. Had a 35mm on the body, removed it while powered on and attached the 90mm.
Didn't work.

Ugh sorry to hear. It does indeed sound like a dud lens in that case :/

Tried cleaning the contacts. Did not work.
Some people are suggesting to shake the lens .
I am not sure if I can do that.
