p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Wild Turkeys

I have been trying to photograph wild turkeys in the Santa Ysabel grasslands for a few weeks. I got these images 3 days after Thanksgiving. (See armd's post "Is it safe?" at https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1625071)
They are very skittish since there is a hunting season. It only takes being shot at once to make them skittish about all humans. These were part of a group of 15 that quickly moved out of shooting range (camera or gun range) and disappeared. BTW, I recommend against photographing turkeys during hunting season in the Spring.

They look worried. They survived on holiday, but another is close at hand.

I didn't realise how colourful wild turkeys are.

You nailed the colors Dave. If the little bullit that comes out of the rifle dose so much harm, just think what must come out of a 77mm barrell!

Nice images Dave, I admire the square feathers on these fine birds who Ben Franklin pushed to be accepted as our national bird. Yes they are skittish and at the same time intriguing. It’s amusing to watch them trot.

You sure brought out the colors in these birds, Dave. I like the threesome best. Good work.

Nice work on these, Dave. Significant color variation compared to our eastern turkeys.

Yes, they always look worried. Fortunately for them hunting season is months away, but I don't think they know that.

Usually turkeys look pretty dull but if they are out of the shade into some direct light they show some nice color. Unfortunately they normally hide in the shade.

Yes, swinging around a big lens scares them. To get photos you need to be inconspicuous and motionless.

They are skittish so most of the time I only get a distant look at them. Even the slightest motion scares them and all you get are butt shots of a trotting turkey.

Thanks Rex. The light was good for a few of the shots I got. Most are dull since turkeys tend to stay in bushes in the shade.

Thanks Vic. If you get them in the light they show some good color. Normally they are not willing to pose in good light.
