Head for me and tail for you.
Really abysmal lighting required 1/50 sec. just to get down to ISO 1600. As long as the otters did not move for a second or so, most of the 100 or so images came out with no subject blur.
A family of 5 or 6 river otters amused me for quite a while at a local fish hatchery. Being such great swimmers, they are much more adept at catching fish than the bald eagles. A week or so ago, there were over 100 bald eagles expecting a salmon spawn that never happened. On this day there may have been 20 to 30 and still no salmon.
As I was watching these otters munching down these smaller fish, a juvenile bald eagle suddenly swooped over them in an attempt to steal their meal. Startled the hell out of them and me also. It happened so fast that I got no shots.
When food is scarce, the odds of starving to death are much higher for juveniles than the adults as they are less experienced at hunting and must take more dangerous attempts trying to compete for food.
It landed just several feet away from me before figuring out to fly away.
