Goldeneyes are too often elusive, at least for me, but I managed to sneak up on these guys this morning. Crouched behind a rock on the waterline and waited for them to come in and out of a small cove over the course of about an hour. During this time the tide came in and soaked my boots, but no way was I going to move and spook these guys.

As an aside, the 100-400 mkii/1.4tc iii/7D2 combo worked quite well in these conditions. It's slower to focus and less consistent than the bare 100-400, and really needs good light, but when you need to put more pixels on the duck, nothing beats reach.

Very nice set. I know from experience they seldom come really close to shore (at least when I am there). Well done.

Thanks Karl. As you can see in the exif, for most of these I used a good dose of negative EC to preserve the highlights. Then in LR, boosted the overall exposure and also the shadows, but knocked the highlights down until the histogram just reached the right edge. Like buffleheads, these birds have a lot of dynamic range in their plumage.

Good work on the stealth work to get the shots. I've done similar many times with Goldeneyes...crouch and wait.
