p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · The benefit of true silent shutter

River otters have decent hearing and there is no way I could have taken many shots of this river otter pup without silent shooting on my Sony A9. I already know that even a quiet shutter sound can scare them off when they are 100 to 200 feet away.

It would not keep its head still while munching on the koi, so it was difficult getting focus on its head, and ISO 12,800 was not ideal. The otter was only around 10-15 feet away.

Cross-posted to Sony Forum.

The older Koi (Carp) are bright orange. The younger ones are brown/greenish. I did not have Eye AF turned on, and do not know if it would have focused on the dead eye of the koi in the otter's mouth.

EDIT: Great Blue Heron and koi added for comparison.

You are the master of '12800' for sure. Doesn't look like a koi but it does look like it was dinner!
Being 10-15ft away sounds quite thrilling Sr T! Nice.......

Wondering what that circle is in his mouth?
Great detail.

The otter is eating a koi (fish) and that is presumably its eyeball.

The silent shutter of my A9 has been incredibly useful for weddings as well. There used to be nothing more grating than the loud “kakakakakakaka” of my Nikon shutter in quiet catholic ceremonies

Didn’t see the second image. It’s incredible. 1st image is nice but not in the same league.

No banding at all w/A9 in the churches?

Agreed. That 2nd image could easily be a National Geographic contest winning photo.

Barely, and that's worst case scenario. The A7III is much worse, that's why I sold it and upgraded my second cam to another A9
