p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Sub-adult tigers from the land of Kipling - 2017

Went for a wedding in the family in 2017. Carved out a week before the event and took a quick trip to Bandhavgarh for 3 nights. I had no expectations of being able to see a tiger in the 4 days that we would be roaming the jungle.

I was told that there was a particular tigress, in a Zone of the forest referred to as Tala. This tigress, Spotty had a set of cubs that were almost 3 years old at that point in time. They were still together, almost independent, and best of all undaunted to explore.

All the 20 odd vehicles that were roaming the forest, did not deter them from carrying on with their daily activities. 20 odd vehicles with some 60+ cameras (mobile and regular) clicking was a botheration for us, wonder what the poor cubs felt. At least in two of the frames, their dissatisfaction is pretty evident. Fortunately they went away into the reaches of the bamboo groves to rest and get away from the roving bipeds.

This was the beginning of my love story for this part of the world. I only had the 100-400 LII and no idea about what was the right reach for something like this. This was more of a learning experience that taught me what to do the next time, I go. So go I did, in March 2019, few friends in tandem. That's for another set. Today I am setting the time machine back to Nov 2017.

Our first sight of the cubs.

Keeping guard

The shy one

Down comes one of the "cubs"

The shutter noise is driving me nuts!...

Need some cooling time

Time to sign off folks.. Good bye i need to go..

Good night folks, I have made by bed and am ready to doze off.

Bibek, these are insanely nice. to get tigers at eye level is a gift from the tiger gods.
BTW I had the good luck of shooting pics of Spotty in 2015, when she was involved in a territory fight with the Rajbhera female.
As you probably know there is an entire episode on the Rajbhera female on BBC as one of parts of the Dynasties series. I got to shoot the pics of Raj Bhera female as she was laying injured in a nullah on the side of the road.so sad to see the tribulations of the tiger females.

Thanks Dave. Will share. The cubs were a lot younger this year and hence more apprehensive. Did not get enough interaction images of them.

Beautiful photos of the mom and cubs. I'm envious, when I went to Kanha in 2008, we only saw one tiger (awake that is, one had been drugged so people could ride elephants to see it). She was collared and like the ones you saw, was irritated by the cars and camera shutters. If everyone used mirrorless with the electronic shutter, maybe the irritation would be minimal.

Thanks a lot KD. Rajbehera seems to have been in trouble a fair bit. When we were there in 2017, she had a porcupine spine stuck on her neck and was collared for close monitoring by the forest guards. Her subadult cubs were with her though. It’s strange how both Spotty and Rajbehera had similar aged cubs. Also this year, Dotty, Spotty and Solo seem to have whelped around the same time. Wonders that I am still not able to fathom.

Thank you Shirley. Yes the mirrorless would help, but as you may have seen in Kanha, we have a lot of people and vehicles around the tigers. This year it seems that there was someone from England that published the “elephant” story and the park authorities have banned the use of elephants to drive the tigers out in the open for viewing.

Yes, we had something like 30 vehicles, and some people were jumping up and down and shouting "tiger, tiger!" so it wasn't at all quiet. I am glad that the parks have stopped using elephants to herd tigers out towards the vehicles. I'd be happy to see some of the restrictions that I see in Southern Africa applied to India's tiger preserves.
