There was Nick Knight, Samuel Beyer's video of Garbage's 'Stupid girl' , so 'coloring' outside the lines wasn't a crime yet
Nor wide spread sale of predigested plug ins either with special effects
The challenge of course was there only was one shot to do it right, with the risk of failure meaning the ruining of a complete shooting day
So to be safe you had to do a lot of experimenting, a very costly proces as eg just 1 E-6 film meant double development costs (due to an extra 100% penalty for fouling up the C41 bath's), a contact sheet of course, all in all around 35 UK pounds ( I was London based then) while the result might very well not be what you were after
Even now despite the possibilities digital processing offers, it's still a struggle to get a presentable result
