A detailed comparison with the Tamron:
https://www.cameralabs.com/sigma-24-70mm-f2-8-dg-dn-art-review/2/

No significant difference between the 2 in terms of sharpness.
Bokeh sightly better on the Sigma but from some samples I have seen, it's not very smooth either.
So basically it's 24mm on one side, a lighter/smaller lens on the other. Will continue to check more pictures from the Sigma but so far don't think I will upgrade the Tamron (I have the Nokton 21mm f/3.5 when I want to go wide)

According to the camera labs review, the Sigma actually beats out the Nikon in most places - aside from 50 - and pulls ahead of the Tamron regularly. Not majorly so, but by a bit and adds the extra 4 on the wide end to boot. Am I reading that wrong?

Another (pretty brief) review. Looks like the reviewer may have got a bad copy.

This is just one copy vs one copy, I'd love to see a comparison here on FM for more data. As it stands, the Sigma looks slightly better than the Tamron imo but not enough that I'd upgrade, given that I cover 24mm with other lenses.

I'm looking at the images on my phone, but to me it looks like the Sigma is best at 24mm, the Nikon beats the Sigma and Tamron from 35-70mm at least on the charts.

At infinity again an advantage for the sigma at the wide end. Tamron and Nikon doing a bit better at the long end, pretty similar but Nikon a bit better. To me the Tamron may be slightly better in the center in general and corners at 70, 35-50 comparable. The midzone on the Sigma seems much better.

From my experience with the Tamron, it looks like the Sigma sharpens up more when stopped down. It seems quite even at f/8 across frame except maybe at 70. I wish the Tamron would get a bit better stopped down - if I'm using a zoom for landscapes these days I'm just going back to my trusty Zeiss Contax 35-70 @f/8.

I received my copy today but unfortunately the glass is tilted starting at 28mm getting progressively worse towards the long range.
It's well centered at 24mm only but my 14-24/2.8 @24mm performs slightly better.

My lucky streak getting optimal copies at first has ended!

Im losing a bit of faith on this one Ive seen a few reviews and found a few hi res samples and its definitely not blowing me away. Now there seems to be quite a high amount of variation also...

My copy is asymmetric but when checking the 'sharp' corners and mid-field, I don't find it particularly great at 35mm and 50mm towards the corners (Lots of astigmatism). At 24mm it's great but my Sigma 14-24 @24 is better.
Take this with a grain of salt as I don't have an optimal copy.

Even Camerlabs second copy, which apparently was reasonably well centred, didn't look that great in the downloaded full rez files. Ill reserve final judgement until I see a test from one of you of a good copy. The wholesalers here will have mine when they open but Ill think Ill pass until I see more. Its not so easy to return things on a whim down here..

Finally had time to filter and upload a full album of shots from the Sigma 24-70 at various different focal lengths. Not a scientific test or brick wall shots, but hopefully can help someone with their decision on the lens' strengths and weaknesses.

Samples Album: https://photos.carlosgomez.me/Extras/Sigma-24-70/

RAW files available if needed, full res downloads enabled on the album.

@thousanths

thanks a lot. Wauw A7RIV, (imo best way to review a lens, A7RIV and infinity pics, A7RIII/II second best). It looks 'punchier' then my gmaster in the DX center frame. In some parts it's softer (but not a lot so), in fact the corners look sharp too, but the middle bottom of image (street) looks bit soft, but this is at F2.8, probably field curvature.

My gmaster 24-70mm i have weird experience with, sometime i have very sharp image at 24mm, but often very soft. I'm still trying to find out why. Perhaps i need 'summer sun' for extra shutter speed, leaf details, contrast, and shutter speed (to reduce blur). At 32-44mm i get consistenly insane sharp images, with a drop off at 70mm. Most my images there are very soft, but i'm stresstesting it there (landscape images) a lot, to know more why. Got some better ones lately. I'll download some more of your images tomorrow to review further.

Thanks @thousandths.
Images are generally a bit more positive but Im still a little disappointed with the edges @24mm. Do you have anything at 24mm more around f8/11? I can mitigate the early stages of diffraction but I am trying to rule out DOF on some of them.
Cheers

So, is the general consensus that it is not much better than the Tamron?

Kinda a bummer seeing these bad copies but it happens. Doesn't really put much faith in QC at sigma lately. These bad copies are getting a bit much unless its due to shipping.

I did see another review not in English and it didn't have any landscape images which i think many are interested to know about (flare, corner performance, CA ect), but images looked good. I called samys camera which i go to always and they had nothing in stock. Have to check back with them in a few weeks possibly since sigma definitely can't keep up with demand.

Cameralabs review is kinda disappointing. If i am getting a 24-70 2.8 i want it to be good at 24mm...

I had all 3. The GM, Tamron and the Sigma. I sold my tamron last week, as I really prefer the 24mm and the images out of camera was more pleasing to me on the sigma. I no longer have my GM either. I currently have 2 other 24-70s. The s Pro 24-70 for my s1r and the Canon 24-70 Mark II that I can adapt to the a7riv or the s1r. To me the S pro and the mark ii are both better than the GM and the Sigma in terms of the corners thru most of the focal range. The one thing I am noticing on the Sigma, that I don't see being brought up anywhere is the focus breathing when recording video. It is extremely annoying. Shooting at a stationary subject just panning up and down it focus breathes say 3-4 times in 10 seconds. I did not have this with the tamron or the GM.

Yeah actually that focus breathing was mentioned in gerald undone review. He said to turn off distortion correction in camera. Then it goes away. He did hear from sigma that they are working on a fix firmware.

Are you trying another copy? Seems we have the curse of the Sigma standard zoom.
The hopeful thing is that the MTFs didn't look to show much astigmatism in theory, so maybe it is a copy issue.

Still waiting for my copy from BH, Sigma is very slow with the stock. One advantage this lens has is the "min focusing distance" over both tamron and sony. Offcourse, this lens cant beat sony, but then again its much cheaper.
