I'm blown away by how much better the DS bokeh is wide open. This would be the obvious choice for 85mm for me over the standard version.

Almost makes me wish I was a pro so I could justify such a lens

Yes if you routinely shoot straight into round light sources in your near-background at f/1.2 then I guess maybe the DS is worth it.

I'll gladly take my extra stop of light.

Yes. Canon did not mess around with these lenses. MTF on 70-200 while theoretical looks really strong. Wonder how it breaths?

The DS f1.2 ! lens with apodization is a first and is among the most lustworthy things I've seen come out of photography in some time.

Curious, with lens apodization how is there no light loss? Is it really still an f/1.2? Sweet lens for sure but typically there is a loss of light transmission with these types of lenses.

Looks like no one will be using that 70-200 in a water housing with that telescoping zoom.

Out of curiosity, were people using 70-200 underwater in the first place? Seems pike light transmission through water is too bad for a telephoto underwater unless you were shooting close distance.

Really excited for this new smaller 70-200. Interesting that it has two motors...

I'm using the 70-200 with 1DXII exclusively in the water for surfing. I'm not talking about using it underwater.

at the 47 sec mark of the third video, I like how at f2.8 it is like the reg 85mm, but the effect becomes noticeable as you open up.

Unless you shoot in low light all the time and need f1.2, I think the slight loss of light at f1.2 of the DS is worth it.

I will get the DS version eventually. Perhaps keep my EF 85 II for the low light.

To answer your question, in the first video at around the 3:10 time stamp my paraphrased/interpretation of when Rudy is saying is that there is a 1.3 stop of light loss at wide open f/1.2 that gradually goes away by the time the lens is stopped down to f/3.5 and smaller.

Other parts of the video that caught my attention if you back up to around the 0.48 time stamp is where he proclaims that this lens is the sharpest Canon 85mm lens ever. I interrupt this to also include the non DS version of this lens at any aperture setting. Then later on at around the 1:50 time stamp he goes on about the softening of the out of focus highlights and bokeh only being impacted at apertures faster/larger than f/3.5 with no difference at smaller aperture settings as compared to the non DS version of this lens at comparable aperture settings. Also at f/1.2 there is a slight increase of the apparent depth of focus that goes away gradually as the lens is stopped down to f/3.5 and smaller. I'm going to gander a guess that at f/1.2 the out of focus highlights and depth of focus of this lens will be similar to a regular f/1.4 lens wide open and gradually becomes imperceptible somewhere around the f/3.5 settings.

Base on this I'm not concerned about the light loss and am very interested in this lens. Of course the inevitable upcoming reviews that hopefully compare this lens to various other smaller aperture lenses will likely seal the deal for me. The only issue for me may be the decision as to if the added size, weight and cost are are worth it over some other slower/smaller max aperture lens.

I think T-Stop and DOF will be closely related, so DOF of the DS lens wide open will be like a normal 85 mm f/2 lens. In my opinion it would be interesting to see images with bokeh highlights compared at equal T-stop.

Yes, f-stop is based solely on geometry. The t-stop (transmission) may be affected.
