p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Shenandoah Bear

This sow has been spotted near my work with her two cubs. Although the cubs don't appear often, mom is usually happy to poke her head out. Fortunately I've had my camera in my car a number of the times she's shown up. While technically not in the Shenandoah National Park, I'm sure sow and cubs range in and out of the park, as I live right on the border.

The first image was in the first week of October when really no color had turned and she stayed tucked in the woods.

The second image was only 10 days later, but the leaves had started to turn. In mid-day light, the colors are still mostly green with slight yellow tints here and there, but this photo was taken right as the sun crested the horizon, lighting up everything a warm yellow/orange, hence the embellished fall colors.

Both are good and I love the fall color in the background of the second. Darkening the second or at least using a curve to darken the blacks might look good. Still impressive as captured.

Thanks, Morris. I'll check out bringing down the blacks when I get home tonight. I appreciate the suggestion.

Beautiful, indeed! I wish I had seen the cubs when they were little; they're getting pretty stout now. Thank you!

Thanks for chiming in, Ron. On my screen(s), the levels on the fur look appropriate. Maybe I should clarify - the right side of her face (camera left) is getting direct sunlight, which is why it appears so bright. Her chest and right arm (again, camera left) have a cloud of fog/mist/condensation from her breathing out in the cold morning air. Is that the portion you're all talking about to lower the darks?

Thank you, Chris. See my comment above regarding the darks. I'm genuinely curious as to what/where you guys mean.

Check the blacks in 1 vs 2. They are overall much blacker in 1.
