It seems that this setup would give you a moderate front light. How would this benefit you more than a flash would?
I'm contemplating doing something similar for some portraits that I will be taking at home on Christmas, but I do not yet know whether it would be ideal for me.

slow.
it was actually light and easy to use. The bogen swivel clamp thing I mouned the cam too weighed more than the light. I couldn't look through both eyes though like I usually do. I had to look only through the view fineder

NOT ideal. i wouldn't recomend it. It is was fun to play with but doesn't put out enought light. Stick with a flash.
i wonder if a neon sign maker would make a custom flash ring someone that ordered one. then encase it in plexi, and then sand down the plexi to disperse the light.
