Looks like my A7r3 and A73 combo will last me through the 2020 wedding season.

Was considering selling the A7r3 for a A9II, but not anymore.

Yes, for the average user this is a small, one could even say, minimal upgrade, but there are a couple of bright sides to it. First, it leaves lots of room for a 36MP A9r some time next year. Yeah, it will probably come at a steeper price, but many of you may well get that all around camera you wanted before too long. Second, it indicates that Sony may be slowing slightly their upgrade cycle which has been brutal for the consumer as you lose value of your camera very quickly and end up spending more when you do upgrade. I am very happy that I don't think my 2 year old Sony A9 will lose much value and I am happy to use it for another 2 to 3 years, and then upgrade when we get an A9 III.

I would hope they actually use their new 48MP, stacked BSI Exmor RS sensor for the A9R as it can still shoot 21fps at 14 bit. But I am more certain than ever we'll never see such a camera unless Nikon or Canon made such a move first to a high MP high performance camera. The strange thing is, the A7RIV pushes far more pixels per/s than the A9/A9II. Even 30MP, 20fps for the A9II would have been sort of an enticement and put it on par with A7RIV's throughput.

It does seem like Sony keeps leaving room for this mythical hybrid.

I'm most excited because when we get camera releases out of the way it leaves room for new lens releases.

Wow, I cant believe they didnt even bother to upgrade the EVF. One of the weakest updates I have seen for a while. I guess Sony is victim of there own success - we were used to big leaps in performance, and now they appear to be doing a Canon.

Wow, I didn't realize the EVF and LCD were the same. That's a pretty huge disappointment.

"I'm amused. It seems all the Sony fans are disappointed, but here I am, the supposed Nikon shill, actually liking what I see (has to be born out in use, though).

I asked for a whole bunch of specific things at Kando 2.0, and many of those are showing up. Things that are useful to me in sports shooting. Thank you Sony. In particular, I want to see if Sony got the voice memo tagging feature right, as it solves a huge problem for me if it does.

Somewhere down the discussion someone said: No improved (faster) sensor, No higher resolution, No improved DR, No improved burst speed, No improved rear display, No improved video codecs / speeds, No (video) picture profiles.

I didn't actually need ANY of those things. I DID need a faster mechanical shutter, a faster Wi-Fi, a better Ethernet, Voice Memos, an easier to find AF-ON button, a locking exposure compensation dial, and better weather sealing. Hmm. I got those things.

There are still a few things I'd like to see in this type of camera, but Sony is slowly dialing it in. Canon and Nikon have a big fight on their hands with the next generation of pro body buying, I think."

I also appreciate that Sony gave us the recent firmware updates for the A9 when they could have chosen to save it for the A9II. It gives me a level of trust in the company.

This all does make sense and Sony didn't hype this release (SAR did ) . No loaners to the influencers etc.
This is a nicely tweaked a9 ahead of the Olympics - and ahead of CaNikon moves - that should get more sports pros over to Sony.
Still bummed as I would have liked to replace the a7riii, but hey

As many others have said, complete miss for my specific use purposes. Without the 36mp sensor, I'll be shooting my R3 and A9 for another year at least. The RIV was not a compelling upgrade for me.

Aye the 2 is might be good for some pro sport shooters. I believe going after the enthusiast wildlife market would probably sell a lot more cameras and the new tele lenses however.

Looking forward to some in-depth reviews but my initial impression is that some of the new 'features' are a little gimmicky. Still one of the best cameras on the market but not the leap I was expecting, especially after all the hype.

Seems rather lackluster, although I'm not a photojournalist or sports shooter so maybe the networking and minor "improvements" to the buttons are worth a $4500 investment for them. Would've thought they'd at least bump it up to 30mp if they weren't really going to do much else.

I wasn't in the market for one, but I was kicking around the idea of picking up an A9 (assuming they drop back to around 2500 or even less) next year to try some sports stuff on the cheap once everyone else upgraded. From here and the other forums I visit it seems like most will be content just sticking with the original

From personal experience the current A9 is way good enough for wildlife already. I even appreciate 24Mps much more now that I've worked with the A7rIV's 61Mps.

I think This is really the key point. Many of us who are enthusiasts or eclectic shooters are disappointed because this camera is not intended for us. The A9II is intended for a very specific of audience of professional photographers who shoot sports or photojournalism of fast-moving events (what would Robert Capa have given us of D-Day if he had this camera?). It is not for landscapers or generalists or family shooters.

I think that Sony is pitching their cameras more specifically, and I think the trend indicates that the A74, presumably arriving in the Spring or Summer, will be a generalist's camera, with features that focus its appeal to those shooters. The A74 and the A9II seem increasingly specialist.

Outside of the specific A9II announcement I think the general sense of disappointment comes from the apparent slowdown in technology advancement at Sony. It's not clear if they're running up against a technical wall or if they've made a decision to maximize profits by capping their R&D expenses. I have a strong hunch it's the latter. Even with their success in the FF MILC market I think the general slowdown in the industry is disincentivizing major investments in R&D. With the competition not really catching up yet they probably don't see the value in pushing the R&D.
