It' easy to see how the improvements in the A9II would be important to news agencies.
They want to get images from the photographers to editors quickly.
I imagine the Wi-Fi network at the Olympics is going to have massive bandwidth.

Unfortunately when I am out taking photos of the flora and fauna, there is no one urgently waiting for my images .
Consequently this is a miss for me.

An interesting question is whether Sony decided to keep the sensor because it was too costly to upgrade it or whether 24MP is the sweet spot for photojournalists etc.

That implies the A9ii is simply Sony presenting a camera for Olympic journalists, when in reality, it's very close to feature parity with the original A9, which a TON of hobbyists and non-pros use for things like birding, airplane, and sports photography.

The A9ii is simply a money grab. Nothing about it is a necessary upgrade for an A9 shooter.

Reading the press release, it seems like they are directly marketing this to the small subset of people going to shoot the Olympics. The average person does not need all those new connectivity features. This seems like a stop gap release because they needed something for the Olympics. If they had a bigger sensor and the new EVF, I think a lot more people would think about upgrading/buying this over the A9.

As a A7R3 owner, I don't see the R4 as a necessary upgrade. If the A9ii had 36mp and the new EVF of the R4, I would have seriously considered the A9ii as my ultimate all-in-one.

This looks like a marketing move to give the working pro voice, better ergonomics and communications, while making the A9 a value proposition. All with little R&D needed. Probably a good business move in a small niche market.

Seems to me Sony knows what they doing. The new A9II will have some buyers and upgraders even though a disappointment to many current A9 owners. Now A7RIV sales will increase. A9 prices will now probably not drop from the current 3500.00 because they do have to and A9 sales may even increase now since many were sitting on their wallets and hands waiting to see what the 9II offered.

This is fantastic. Now I will patiently wait for Canon to produce an EOS R mk2 that will have minimal tweaks and within the 30-40MP range sensor. The 80MP sensor rumoured is still too much for me.

I think the world is seeing a lot of happy smiling A9mk1 users with the latest firmware. It's a good day for them!!

Yes our A9 cameras did not suddenly plummet in value, one small mercy.

Then be happy with the current a9, nothing wrong with that. Like I said, this camera is aimed purely at people who need to get images off the camera asap and will be shooting large pro events.

Sold mine last week for 2900.00. Now I wonder if that was the right move and maybe should have kept it. Luckily I only paid 3100.00 new for it. I hope my R4 can fill its shoes. If not I may be buying another A9. Ugh

Oh well, I guess I can relax now. I wanted 36MP. None of the improvements matter to me, at least not enough to spring for a new body. All the connectivity stuff and the higher frame rate with the mechanical shutter are not a big improvement for me.

36MP A9II would have seen me sell A7RIII and A9, now they stay firmly in my bag until A7RV and A9III or do they?
Nikon and Canon confirmed sports pro mirrorless are in development and the chasm is not so deep to cross. A9II could have been a psychological and technological death blow if rumours were true.

I am sure a few folks will reconsider the sale of their A9 or withdraw it from the market if they have put it out there already. This could bump up the value of used A9 quite a bit.

Yep I was thinking the same thing. I would expect the A9 used prices to go up now because At the $2700 or so of many used ones I have seen, it is a steal at least to me, vs the A9ii price.
On the other hand, I am now even more impressed that Sony gave the original A9 so many extra features with firmware updates considering the not so big differences of the A9ii, I would have thought they may reserve more of those added features for the A9ii only to create a bigger gap between the 2 cameras. Guess that is the good thing about competition.
Anyways, my deadly combo remains the same A9 and R3 for now.
Next I am adding maybe an RX10 IV (just waiting to see version V with the new battery) or may even try an XT3 for the 4k60p video since I was let down by the 6600.
In any case, I guess the A9 is so good that they could only do so much to make it perfect for the Olympic Games ,
Odd times...

Sony appears to have made a strategic early release of the A9 MKII to attract news/press pro shooters and their companies in time for a ramp up to the Olympics. Now there really is no excuse for clacking shutters at new conferences, etc. and pro shooters in an kind of quiet venue can shoot at any time.

Although many are disappointed as a previous Nikon shooter this is the kind of release which would be an wildest trumpeted as a deluxe intermediate ‘“s” upgrade (read D5s). As an action shooter I am satisfied with 24 map unless 30+ map came with better Hi ISO noise which, I suppose, is not possible-yet.

Overall I am relly relieved that my four A9 bodies have not been obsoleted by the MKII’s new features that are non essential to my work.

Northrup made a good point that it does claim to fix the slight viewfinder lag when shooting at full burst, not worth an upgrade, but maybe something that was preventing pro sports shooters from coming over?

Please explain how a journalist could photograph the olympics with the A9ii but couldn't with an A9.

The few little tweaks will be important to some sports shooters. Some do really rely on voice memos when shooting. The poor mechanical shutter of the original A9 also made using it for sports almost a non-starter and now the mechanical shutter can be used when it is required. Those were two big issues (plus what buffalowolff and Dclark said above) that mattered to some sports shooter, and will make a difference to some at the Olympics.
