I don't even have a Sony camera or had plans for an A9II and I am disappointed. I though Sony was really going to raise the bar with this new release and bring some sort of revolutionary new thing. The type of thing I could not resist and would make me hit the "Buy Now" button, but this is definitely not the case.
I am sure a lot of folks that dumped their A9's to make room for this are pretty bummed about it.

While I was excited for the inovation, I'm happy now to rest on my a9 and a7r IV. I'm curious of the sales #s of a7R III vs a9 and if this was a move to get in a new body for the olympics but not canabalize the a7R IV sales with a higher MP sensor.

You should see how many R3 owners are paying $1500 for a red focusing box.

No regret here that I just bought a used A9. I would have had doubts if this update had offered way more resolution. Now I just have to continue my wait for the 200-600mm lens...

OMG I read through more and noticed the A9II doesn't even get the new higher res 5.7MP EVF like the A7RIV. To me this no longer seems quite so much flagship. I wonder what next, they announce there will never be 300 f/2.8 or 500 f/4.

I know everyone is going to complain about this upgrade, but everyone needs to realize this camera isn't for 99% of people on this forum. No one here is going to be shooting at the Olympics and that's all Sony cares about. It's still the best camera on the market by far and the upgrades only make it better.

That being said, a 30 mp sensor and upgraded EVF would've been amazing.

Welp, my wallet is safe from dropping big $$ on a new A9II, or an A9 for that matter, as this will ensure A9 used prices stay reasonable.

I'll continue to decide if upgrading to the A7RIV is worth it.

Really though, I would've been perfectly content to not see an update to the original release for at least another year since it still stands alone in the market as is.

Not sure about everyone else, but I am definitely not disappointed. I'm actually happy that Sony isn't draining my gear fund at the same rate it was trying to before.

Let's not forget what the camera market was with the old big names for a very long time.

Please explain how a journalist could photograph the olympics with the A9ii but couldn't with an A9.

Lesson here is don’t get caught up in the rumor mill. It never works out and you will never be disappointed. But there is a bright side the tech that creates this a92 will trickle down to other models like the A7IV. Hopefully . Now quickly go buy that really cheap A9 listed somewhere

Well a lot of us A9 owners are bummed. It's not like it's 2x the price of the A7RIV, at $1K more it's well within reach of a lot of people.

That implies the A9ii is simply Sony presenting a camera for Olympic journalists, when in reality, it's very close to feature parity with the original A9, which a TON of hobbyists and non-pros use for things like birding, airplane, and sports photography.

The A9ii is simply a money grab. Nothing about it is a necessary upgrade for an A9 shooter.

I'm honestly at the point where I wish they just took the A7RIII sensor and put it into the A7RIV body with that AF system, that would've been perfect.

Two observations:

A) I'm not the target audience of this camera - I don't need that instant transfer, voice memo, etc. Many of us probably wanted a new gen perhaps 36mp sensor, but that would make wifi transfer slow, ergo Sony opted to stay put.

B) Camera innovation, on the current platform, has plateaued out. With current physical designs, there isn't much more Sony and others can do to improve speed, accuracy, etc. It will now take a platform change/revolution to make substantial improvements. From now on, most camera manufacturers have to become software powerhouses and hire top talent to improve AI/ML algorithms, that is where the battle is going to be.

Given how little breakthrough innovation Sony put in this camera, I think the street price of this model will soon move significantly lower. $4,500 is too rich for what this is IMO. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure it is an amazing camera, but throwing in an updated sensor, top of the line EVF/screens, etc wouldn't have been too much to ask for.

Like others, I am actually relieved. I received my A7R4 a week ago, and have barely begun to adapt/adjust/learn it. But have been fighting that sick gut-feeling that I jumped too soon and likely chose poorly. Now free of that self-doubt, I can just go enjoy the new R4 and learn to get the most out of it as an all-around premium body. I'll watch the A9 market closely for possibly picking this up to complement the R4 at a bargain. Maybe black Friday or other options push the A9 below 3grand. Thanks Sony!

I'm both disappointed and happy.
Disappointed because I would really love an a9 with more megapixels - that's my primary wish.
Happy because I didn't need to spend the money I was prepared to drop today.

I understand the changes - it's a nice upgrade for pro sports shooters especially anyone who does not already have the a9. But this is a specialist upgrade.

The announcement should sell a lot of a7rivs

Feels a bit like a sick joke, doesn't it? The value proposition of upgrading from an A9 to A9ii is far lower than R3 to R4.

Upgrading the mechanical shutter to A7R3 speeds?

I'm still eagerly waiting on the high-res/pro Canon R body. Sony won me over in 2019 but clearly resting on their laurels with these last two "upgrades".

This is fantastic. Now I will patiently wait for Canon to produce an EOS R mk2 that will have minimal tweaks and within the 30-40MP range sensor. The 80MP sensor rumoured is still too much for me.

I think the world is seeing a lot of happy smiling A9mk1 users with the latest firmware. It's a good day for them!!
