I just took my lens out for a spin this morning. The vast majority of my images are mush and not very sharp. I am willing to admit user error on my part, but on the vast majority? After reading some comments here, I wonder if there is an issue with this lens? All of my images were taken with the mechanical shutter on an XT2 and processed in Lightroom. I'll post some images soon.

If you can avoid using the mechanical shutter, and avoid using Lightroom, you will probably see a big improvement.

Bummer this lens is having issues for so many people. Have you tried updating to the latest (1.01) firmware version yet? It seems they've already done a release.

Yes, I did that first thing. I love the build, size and the IS. Hopefully Fuji can get this fixed.

This is little too much!
I'm surprised that Fuji didn't react already, they were very quick in past, in situations like this.
I'm not getting it, until this settles down, I can wait.

Warning - a lot of images.

Here are some sample images from my shoot this morning. Most of these are the "better" images. The auto focus is not to be trusted and the user is to be regarded with suspicion as well. Most of these images were taken on a Benro travel tripod. I will try to identify the handheld images.

Orion over Usery Mountain, the glow is the city of Phoenix. (two variations)

I thought this image turned out well and was pleased with these shots. For an f4 lens, it worked well here. No complaints.
There were some images of Ursa Major, but I missed the focus.

A poor attempt at an HDR image, merely as an experiment. The cholla in the foreground is sharp (in more ways than one).

Some handheld images:

https://www.byboyd.com/img/s/v-10/p3685477400-5.jpg (tried to get close to this cholla skeleton, I was off focus here, but that was my fault)

Images that just didn't turn out (somewhere edited others were not). Most of images turned out this way.

https://www.byboyd.com/img/s/v-10/p3685494314-5.jpg

And I had to have a little fun with one of the saguaros. This image could explain a lot of things about my mental health, but I will leave it at that:

Final thoughts
As I looked back over the images, I had many that just were not in focus. They were close, but not enough for the sharpness I have seen touted about this lens. Or, when handheld, the SS was fast enough for sharp images, but they came out soft. At one time, as I was trying to focus the lens, the image on the display kept wiggling as if the IS didn't know what to do. That only happened once, but it was an odd occurrence. All of these images were taken with the mechanical shutter enabled. The battery life of the camera took a hit as well. I know that these batteries have "short legs", but going through two batteries in about 3 hours was ridiculous. Normally, with heavy use (no video), I can get a battery through three hours of shooting.
Having used the XT2 with some old adapted Canon glass, I have had more success with sharpness. I will continue to experiment, but if this doesn't improve, I will have to return the lens to Adorama before my refund window closes.

When did Fuji post this? I looked a couple of days ago, and didn't see anything for the 16-80.

I suspect the other half of the equation is that Lightroom users will have to wait for Adobe to add the correct lens profile.

It says it was released on Oct 17th in the release index. I would try it out. The last update for the XP2 was the July 23rd. They sometimes do release for older camera bodies to add support for newer lenses and I see they haven't done that yet for this lens.

That could be the key, camera FW update to support newly released lens!
But, why is it taking for so long?

An update: I looked over my photos from the outing and considering the conditions that they were taken in. My theory is that the IS was trying to compensate for the vibrations I introduced into the camera each time I pressed the shutter. My Benro tripod is a small, travel tripod that isn't the steadiest when fully extended. Also, I found some of my pictures were long exposures. The camera was taking photos each time I put it into my bag because of the soft shutter release I added.

I did some additional tests on over the last few days. Nothing scientific because there were in brick walls or cats involved. I could not get the problems to repeat themselves. The battery life still takes a hit, but it wasn't as bad as on Saturday. Even switch between ES and MS or different tripods didn't yield the same problems. I do think there are some quirks with the lens, but there are quirks with the photographer as well.

Overall, I think the image quality is fine with the lens and the IS is very good. This kit was bought to replace my 5DMKII and 24-104mm lens (the original one). At half the weight, I think it does it. My only concern is the poor battery life. Going into this setup, I knew the battery life was not the strong point of the system, but it can be dealt with. I just need to add some more batteries and an additional charger for the field.

Here are some photos taken over the last few days. None of them are artistic wonders, they were merely to see what the lens can do. All of the images were taken as compressed raw and processed in Lightroom CC. They are a mixture of MS and ES, handheld. Edit - the last two images look a little soft. This is probably due to the resolution change for web. The leaves are sharp in the raw file.

The new FW seems to be targeting some of the OIS and AF issues. I just installed it and will see how it performs.

I didn't have any issues with the lens once I went back to the X-H1, but now I guess I don't have to sell my X-Pro2 just yet.

Good to see Fuji working on the issues, but the lens should never have been released with them...

Just be thankful it's not Nikon - they would deny the problem for a year, and then make you send the lens in to them for two months so they could update the firmware...

I tried out the lens with the new firmware (1.02) and there seems to be a big difference. It wasn't a detailed test, but I went out and tried it on different images and shutter types. Other than my dog not holding still or a breeze blowing to shake the leaves, I found sharper images and more consistent auto focus. This was more of the results I was looking for.

Too bad Fuji couldn't figure this out in the beginning, but at least they quickly are working on fixing the problem.

Glad they have apparently solved the issues with your new lens. They are usually great about fixing problems and issuing software updates that contain features which is something that nobody did previously. They're good to their customers.

They were a good company to do business with even in the film days. My father loved their film quality for saturated color and value pricing even though the majority of our film refridgerator was filled with Kodak.

I'm almost afraid to try the new firmware for my 16-80! Maybe I just got a "Best" copy, but I have been nothing but impressed with it since I got it. Just took it to the Smoky Mountains and could not believe how good the focus and sharpness was. I never used any other lens, the 16-80 did everything for me.

I found myself taking handheld shots at 1/10 shutter speed and getting tack sharp images. Normally I have a problem getting sharp images below 1/100, so I am VERY impressed so far.
