Has anyone tried the A7RIV with the Sigma MC-11 adapter and any Canon AF telephotos yet? How does it compare to using the MC-11 on other camera bodies - ideally the A7RIII or A7III, please. Thanks,

I would be interested in a metabones report with Canon glass as well.

Send me a 3002.8 and adapter be happy to test it. If good I may keep it.

Actually it's worth a rental

I tried it last night with a Canon L 70-200 f4 non-IS. Seemed to work fine, AF, tracking etc. tbh I don't even need the AF of the lens, its just for occasional landscape use when I want lighter than the 100-400

To make the question more specific, the problems with adapted lenses on the a7RIII (particularly telephoto lenses) are:

1) Hunting/slow focus/misfocus when using focus points outside the central area. For example eye AF when the eye is not in the centre of the frame is relatively unreliable.

2) Poor focusing in poor light.

3) Hit and miss with tracking (if any tracking at all).

Is there any improvement on the above with A7RIV? I know that A9 behaves a lot better with adapted lenses and although I don't expect similar performance I wonder whether there is any improvement.

I tested this out yesterday quite a bit, so I'll share my evaluation (with Canon 135):

1) I noticed a touch of hunting and the focus I thought was pretty slow for the 135. There were a couple times it refused to focus. When it did focus, it hit accurately. It did perform better when used in Super 35 mode, but that's not to say that it performed poorly when not in Super. Used center point for most but did move the point around the screen to get it off dead center.

2) Depends on what you define as poor light I guess, but I ran the ISO up to 12800 and found the darkest part of the store. Seemed to do well, didn't have any issues getting focus. I think this was pretty much center point.

3) For the little tracking I did, it was mostly me doing the tracking. I didn't let the camera track anything around the screen.

I did notice that, compared to the native lenses I tried, it didn't seem to pick up the eye as much as I would have expected, especially when the eye was easily seen. It seemed to jump all over the place with the AF before settling in. The guys in the store noticed that too and said that wasn't very Sony like. We used center point, Flex medium and zone. Zone was by far the worst for the jumping around. It would grab the closest body part and start focusing then realize there was a head and eye. Once it found the eye, it stayed mostly locked although a couple times it went back to jumping around before coming back to the eye.

As a point of reference, the 135 was used, so it could have had some issues.

I did a quick test of the A7Riv with the Canon 200-400 x1.4 + MC-11 at 560mm,
the Sigma 150-600mm "C" + MC-11, and the Sony 200-600mm at 600mm.

The sharpness was
#1 Canon 200-400mm
#2 Sony 200-600mm
#3 Sigma 150-600mm

The Sony and the Sigma were close, but the native AF of the Sony lens was best of the three. I need to repeat this test because the light was changing outdoors. I would not rely on the Sigma for BIF, it's too slow with the MC-11.

Based on some of the comments further down in the thread, I'll try to come up with a better set of tests. I have the A7iii, A9 and A7Riv, so this could take a while to finish.

I’m doing a trip to Costa Rica in feb and just bought the Sony 100-400, 1.4 tc, and the Riv. I also have a canon 1dx and 500 f4 I. I’m planning on picking up an A9ii. My dilemma is what do I take? I could pick up a 200-600 for the A9 and take the Riv and 100-400. My worry is the low light performance. Alternatively, I take the 500 with either 1dx or A9ii plus the Riv and 100-400. I know these are 1st world problems but, any thoughts? Thanks

I'm also planning a trip to Costa Rica in the Spring. I plan to take the A9 and A7Riv with the 200-600. Your best bet is to take some flash gear too, the light can be very bad in the deep forest cover. Check with your guide to see what he recommends. Arbitrage and a few others have posted some great wildlife shots. You might want to ask what he recommends.

I was in Costa Rica twice with my adapted Canon 400mm f/2.8 Mark II lens and each time, I came back home with plenty of keepers. The first time around I only had 2 copies of the A7r II and my Sony native long lens was the 70-300mm G. The second time around I had the A7r III and A9 and the GM 100-400mm plus TCs as my native long lens.

As long as you don't try to get BIF there, you will be fine with either Sigma MC-11 or Metabones. Most birds perch and a lot of hummingbirds do hover near a nectar source (genuine or artificial ) and can be treated as stationary... well, almost. Both times, reach is more important than AF speed, at least, in my case, especially for quetzals. A little bit of fill in flash won't hurt as long as it is not overpowering but not allowed for quetzals. I had a Better Beamer as my flash extension. And tripod is a must.

So, it sounds like I’m good with canon 500 f4 with A9ii and the man the Riv with the Sony 100-400. Thanks

Do you think it’s worth getting the 200-600 given how slow it is?

I would say so. But like I mentioned before, there were cases where the reach was more important for me. On the last trip I had to use a combined TCs (1.4X and 2X) for my 400mm for an effective FL of 1,200mm and still it was barely enough.

The 200-600mm gives you the most bang for your buck for Sony users. It is the best long zoom lens regardless of brands at this point. And you can double the FL with the FE 2X TC. With the A9 you still can get the PDAF. I would get that, not only for Costa Rica but for anything else if your interest is wildlife/bird photography.

I worry about shooting f9 in the trees. ISO per formance on the Riv doesn’t seem to be stellar, we’ll see with a9ii

Are you going to CR on a photo tour or do it on your own? A lot of photo tours give you the opportunity to take pictures at feeding stations, more out in the open for better lighting. A lot of lodges setup something like that, too. Chances are the lighting conditions would be better than how you imagine. It is not like shooting under rainforest canopies all the time. You know what I mean after you have been there . Still, tripod is a must.

Shooting quetzals is different and indeed you have to deal with low lighting conditions but you are shooting on a tripod and you can adjust the ISO accordingly. This is the situation where you need the longest reach you can get, too.

I tried with Ef500/4 IS II +1.4TC with MC11 with 7R4 but not very good for BIF. However, this combo is very good for stationary birds.

Hi all, I have just gotten the a7rIV (so my knowledge and tech proficiency is severely lacking) along with the mc-11, and have tried to use it with my Canon 70-200 2.8mkiii + 2x iii combo (which worked exceptionally well on my 5Dmk3). So far, I haven't even fired a shot because of continual hunting--which reading the above--leads me to believe I have the wrong settings selected?
I have tried AF-C + S/zone/center etc. (center was the only time it would hold focus, but never where I desired it), turned on/off many settings to no avail.
Can anyone help with what focus settings I should be (or can only be) running with the Sony. I have a lot of canon glass to test, but need to know I have the settings correct in the first place. Do I have to calibrate the sigma to this combo or the likes?
Many thanks in advance, Peter

To follow up on my earlier post, I tested it pretty thoroughly today for some swim work with both my 70-200 and 300II.

Both lenses focused well on things that aren't moving. In fact, even shooting high ISOs (10k-12.8k), the images are sharp with great detail. Because of what I was testing, I was shooting both 15/26mp jpegs and 26mp RAWs.

However, once things started moving, neither performed as well. As with my A73, the focus seems to be just a little off, almost like a small front or back focus. The camera seemed to be a touch slow to react, which made hitting the initial focus off and then that threw everything else. That said, the Sony 70-200 didn't fare too much better. I tried Center, Center Lock On, Flex S/M, Lock Flex S/M and wide area. None of them seemed to do any better than the other. I would estimate that out of 300 images, about 10 would be useable.

That said, I'm still learning the AF system, so it could easily be something I did incorrectly or something set up wrongly. I tried to follow the advice I have received here and elsewhere, but it just didn't hit for me in comparison to what I get from my 1DxII. So, next up - the A9.

Peter, please take a look at this thread: https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1569131/0. I hope this helps somewhat. There are other posts there, please perused them and pick and choose what applies to you. Please also note that in the meantime, I bought and have been using a Sony GM 600mm for my wildlife needs since. The A7r IV wasn’t available at that time. Feel free to ask any questions you may have.
