To follow up on my earlier post, I tested it pretty thoroughly today for some swim work with both my 70-200 and 300II.
Both lenses focused well on things that aren't moving. In fact, even shooting high ISOs (10k-12.8k), the images are sharp with great detail. Because of what I was testing, I was shooting both 15/26mp jpegs and 26mp RAWs.
However, once things started moving, neither performed as well. As with my A73, the focus seems to be just a little off, almost like a small front or back focus. The camera seemed to be a touch slow to react, which made hitting the initial focus off and then that threw everything else. That said, the Sony 70-200 didn't fare too much better. I tried Center, Center Lock On, Flex S/M, Lock Flex S/M and wide area. None of them seemed to do any better than the other. I would estimate that out of 300 images, about 10 would be useable.
That said, I'm still learning the AF system, so it could easily be something I did incorrectly or something set up wrongly. I tried to follow the advice I have received here and elsewhere, but it just didn't hit for me in comparison to what I get from my 1DxII. So, next up - the A9.
