p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Recover or die.

Over the years I have seen many injured birds and animals. In most cases a broken wing means death for a bird. A broken or damaged leg or beak on a bird means there may be a chance to survive for who knows how long. A broken leg on a deer most always results in its death. I have seen some deer with a badly injured leg limp around for over a year and recover. In most instances there is no point in calling any government wildlife agency because they usually can't capture the animal or they do not have the resources. Around here, a wildlife officer or police officer will shoot a deer with a broken leg.

This mother river otter has a bad head gash that just missed her left eye and grazed her nose. No idea what caused this injury, but it could have been a boat propeller. Unlike us, she can't go to a doctor to have that cut treated, nor would it be feasible to try and capture the otter.

She is swimming in salt water a lot of the time, and she has three pups that she is still looking after.

Sorry for the bad, noisy photos, but there was poor light and I could not use a shutter speed less than 1,000 because they were moving too fast. Even at ISO 6400, this was under-exposed by 2 to 3 f-stops.

I hope she recovers.

Always sad to hear about situation like this, but this is real life. Good narrative and shot Tony.

That is a tough reality and it does look like a prop gash, don't know what else would cut like that. Got the nose a little as well. Hopefully she survives!

Sad to see that poor otter, I hope she survives. While her chances look iffy, it is sometimes amazing how some animals survive bad injuries. We saw a lioness years ago that had an injury that kept her from eating as much as she need to eat. She was very skinny, you could see her ribs easily. But she could still jump over a small stream. We heard later that she had survived.

Thanks Louie. Looks like the skin/fur was actually peeled away as to just a straight gash.
